Mayor Bloomberg says that Sunday meter parking actually makes it easier to find parking spots, because other drivers aren’t able to leave their cars parked all weekend, and he is promising to veto the bill.
“This bill is an attempt to pander to a handful of people who will be very disappointed if it is passed. If it is passed I will veto the bill,” Bloomberg said before today’s vote.
Council members say they have enough votes to override a veto if the mayor chooses to challenge their bill.
He was talking about the fact that people got tickets on Shavuos – where alternate side is suspended, but meter regulations are not suspended. People parked by meters over the holiday thinking they wouldn’t have to “feed” the meter, but meter regulations weren’t suspended — only on major holidays.
