Munkacho, Ukraine – The restored Chasidic Synagogue has been opened in Mukachevo, Zakarpatye region, Ukraine. The Munkacher Rebbe Moishe-Leyb Rabinovich and his congregation were present at the inauguration ceremony.

For the Jewish community of Mukache which counts one thousand Jews this was a great event. This turned out to be a double festivity when the Rabbi Rabinovich, who was born in this very house in 1940, arrived to share the joy of the occasion. Just as in 1940, there was a crowd of people around the Synagogue while inside the renewed Synagogue were Chassidim gathering for the Shacharis Prayer for the first time in 65 years.

Why is it considered so important when this this or that Chasidus get back it’s original shul in Eastern Europe? In most cases (agreed, this one seems different, with 1000 local Jews), there are few if any Jews left in the area, and the money spent restoring these buildings could be better spent establishing new shuls in other places. Was Eastern Europe a Makom Kadosh, that we must get all our property back? A new Beis Medrash in Eretz Yisroel would serve as a true Makom Torah in a place that truly is Kadosh, rather than trying to draw people back to lands in Europe where so much Jewish blood was spilled.
