Those federal taxes you’ve been paying on your long-distance calls were going toward a now-defunct war fund that, as the name implies, financed conflicts dating back to the Spanish-American War. And now, it’s payback time. For the 2006 tax year, anyone with a long-distance phone bill is eligible for a onetime federal excise tax refund.
The catch is you have to know to ask for it. Because the IRS was slow to get the word out, sites like RefundsforGood.org are working to step up public awareness. Individuals will get back $30 for one exemption, and $10 for each additional exemption that they claim, up to $60. If you don’t claim your refund, the forfeited money goes back to Uncle Sam.
Remember, many people qualify to efile their return online for free.
