    Community Summer Alert!

Sloatsburg, NY State Thruway North – VIN News has been contacted by the New York Department of Transportation with an important notice about the designated summer Minchah area on the NYS Thruway North.

This meeting place was the result of many years of hard work by our dedicated community askanim and local officials, when only after much compromising and goodwill was the location B’H exclusively set apart for the frum community.

However, there have been many recent reports about abuse of this kindness. Individuals who irresponsibly use this for their own personal gain are jeopardizing the area for the rest of us. The minchah location was created solely for the religious purpose of davening, and any other activity outside of this category is not permitted. It is against the law to conduct business there, i.e. selling sodas to books, knickknacks, etc. Besides for the misconstruing the basis of the prayer area, it also angers the storeowners, who legally pay and set up shop in the rest area. The blatant disregard for the rules is the cause of much anti-Semitism.

Additionally, as proper respect and appreciation for this designation, we must do our utmost to leave a good impression. Do not litter and leave a mess for the NYS DOT to deal with, as many have complained about the garbage we leave behind.

We cannot afford to chalilah create a Chillul Hashem, instead let us make a powerful Kiddush Hashem this summer.

Perhaps the Thruway Authority can be convinced to “rent” space to the Heimishe vendors who would have to agree to not sell any products that are sold inside. Let them distibrute those fees to placate the stores.
An alternative would be to convince existing stores to carry products utilized by the “Heimishe”.
I was always surprised at the lack of such products while many gas stations on the Jersey 17 have been far more accomodating – and cashing in on it.

Rabbosai, what you do in your Shtibel is your business, but when you are a “guest” in another place you should “follow the rules”.
    Enough said!

‘the store owners dont sell any of the kosher food or items that are sold by the pedlers, ‘

    Nuch,
This is not an issue of ‘zeh nehneh v’zeh lo chosor’, the fact is there are people selling chochkes in the rest area and they have to pay rent, so what do you think they are going to say when they see people selling stuff on the grass for no rent? This is clearly ossur as the rules there clealy prohibit this.

I must say that one of the most beautiful sights to see is the davening at Sloatsburg. You see people from all walks of life joining to form a minyan. It is so Beautiful!!!

A similar situation happens with the £inyanim organized on flights. I know that many very choshuva ppl daven byichydus on airplanes rather than join these minyanim wich often cause c’h

Thanks for the mareh mokom its very interesting. I just wanted to add that how do we expect our children to respect the gov and goyim in general if the adults cant abide reasonable regulations that are for our own benefit be it building saftey (willy) fire saftey (skver) or saftey in our camps we have to be extra careful not to cause a chill hashem. If we cant behave properly at sloatsberg the gain that we get from tfila bitzibur is outweighed 10x by the loss caused by the chillul Hashem.

    B”H
see yesterdays Rashi, Chukas Chapter 20 verse 17:
nor will we drink well water.
He should have said, “water from cisterns.” However, Moses said, “Though we have manna to eat and a well from which to drink, we will not drink from it, but we will buy food and drink from you, for your benefit.” From here [we learn] that even if a guest has his own provisions, he should buy from the shopkeeper [or householder] to benefit his host. — [Midrash Tanchuma Chukath 12, Num. Rabbah 19:15]

“and isn’t pedling and eating part of the prayers ritual”?

Would that be the Sefardic nusach or the Ashkinaz? The Chasidic minhag, or the Litvish? In no synagogue in which I have ever davened is walking around selling stuff — or for that matter, eating stuff — while one is supposed to be davening actually “part of the prayers ritual.” Does the peddling part come before or after the Shemona Esrai?

There should be signs saying that it is against the law to sell products in this location and fines will be imposed…. Then impose the fines…. It should be assur to but from anyone selling there as it may cause our permission to use the area to be revoked

I stopped going there–the loudspeakers with music blaring from the seforim stores selling out of their minivans and the incredible amount of shnorrers makes it impossible for me to daven with kavonna

Northbound, at the Sloatsburg Service Area. It used to be called the “Mincha Area”, but the ACLU sued the state, so the sign now reads “Meeting / Prayer Area”.

you can’t imagine how amazing this site is, 1st of all, many people that are a chiuv to say kaddish, can do so with minyanim all the time for mincha and maariv, 2nd, it B”H stopped many people that used to pull over on the side of the road to daven, and created a huge danger, now this is a safe place to daven.
