Working under Chief of Department Joseph Esposito, Giannelli will be responsible for the auxiliary police force and security at police headquarters. His appointment begins today.
Giannelli began his career in 1968 as a patrolman in Manhattan's 23rd Precinct in East Harlem. He was promoted to sergeant in 1974 and assigned to Brooklyn's 77th Precinct. He then worked as a supervisor with a Brooklyn narcotics unit.
Giannelli, a married father of three adult children, succeeds retiring Chief Nicholas Estavillo, who also joined the NYPD in 1968. Estavillo became chief of patrol in January 2002. [Newsday]
