St. Adolphe Canada – St. Adolphe Forced to Fine Members of Hasidic Community

St. Adolphe Canada – The town of St. Adolphe d’Howard had no choice but to fine members of the Belz Hasidic Jewish community $1,000 despite attempts at harmonious co- existence, the mayor of the small municipality 100 kilometres northwest of Montreal said.

St. Adolphe made headlines in June when town manager Michel Binette made unflattering comments to Radio-Canada about the religious sect after its members purchased the Miramont resort for $3.5 million.

Among other things, Binette said he worried the Hasidic community would become ghettoized and ignore local bylaws.

At the time, leaders of the Jewish community berated Binette for suggesting the Hasidim would not follow the law.

In the last month, however, the new owners of the former resort constructed a fence without a permit, contravening local bylaws, the town said.

By town standards, the fence was both too high and too close to Lac de la Montagne, which the estate overlooks.

“They seemed to intend to conform when they were notified” of the bylaws, Binette said.

Last week, the town sent a notice to the owners of the property, but by Wednesday morning no changes had been made and the town issued the $1,000 fine.[The Gazette]

I grew up summers in st. Adolphe (otherwise known as Trout Lake). One thing I know for sure – the officials are majorly anti-semitic. Before you are quick to post comments such as “why do some people think they are above the law….?” I’d find out both sides of the story. Hey wait a second, isn’t that in the Torah as well? Being Dun Lkaph zchus?

“He (the Mayor) Had no choice but
    to fine them $1,000. Dollars”.
Poor Mayor. Not to worry. There are many more technicalities [& reasons for issuing fines] on the
    books.

Well the way I see it. The town was looking for a reason to fine these guys. I say that they got off cheap. Only 1000 and they can keep their fence.
