Otisville — A 44-year-old convicted drug dealer walked away from a federal prison camp last night but David Perez didn’t get very far.
U.S. Marshals and a litany of other law enforcement agencies found him three hours later, said officials from the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville.

Prison officials discovered Perez was missing at about 5:30 p.m. A manhunt by U.S. Marshals, Mount Hope police, Orange County Sheriff’s deputies, correctional staff and state police ensued and Perez was found at about 8:35 p.m.

Perez, a native of Hartford, Conn., is serving a 17-year prison term for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute drugs and distribution of more than five kilograms of cocaine.
His anticipated release date is June 30, 2012.The federal prison camp at Otisville is a minimum security facility that houses roughly 125 offenders.

10:49 – I never made $75k and my income was always taxable on the books. I managed to pay for yeshivas for 5 children and chassanahs etc. I say if you comit the crime, be ready to do the time.

Cut the garbage. You don’t even know what paying taxes means. According to the law if you make 75 grand you are considered wealthy. No frum Jew with our tuitions, camps, Sukkahs, Matzos etc… can live off of that. You don’t even know what your accountants are doing, they make certain things deductible that aren’t. I am not saying that there isn’t a person out there who is very strict but most people fudge things at some point. You just don’t even realize at this point that it is illegal. Do you have a cleaning lady? Do you pay her taxes. OK, I know some guy will pop up and say yes but let’s get real, most of us don’t. And how many people have never paid or gotten paid off the books. I don’t do it either officially but I can’t say I’ve NEVER done it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9:07 – I find your statement: ” Most of the people in the camp there are guilty of crimes most of us do all the time. Don’t tell me you don’t evade taxes in sme way.”, outrageous and insulting.

Most people I know obey the laws and pay their taxes. There is nothing that I have ever done that warrants more than a fine for speeding. Maybe you should look for a more upstanding circle of friends.

I’m with anon 9:36. Just because some of you may evade taxes or engage in other activities that could land you in Otisville, don’t assume that the rest of us do. While I understand the temptation, there is no reason any of these crimes should be treated any differently than eating pork.

Ottisville is a minimum security prison. You can just walk off and leave. You would be meshuga to do it, because once they catch you your going to a much worse prison.

It’s pretty easy if the prisoner was in the camp. When I had a relative there for IRS issues, nto exactly a major security risk, he was in the camp and you technically could just walk off. If he was in the camp, chances are he isn’t too dangerous because most of the people there were there for mney crimes. But in todays judicial system, you never know. Murderers get off with less than money crimes.
