For the last month, armed citizens of the Edgewood Park Defense Patrol have also been riding bikes and carrying guns on city street.

The group says New Haven doesn’t have enough of its own officers to keep neighborhoods safe, so they have written a letter to Gov. Jodi Rell asking her for assistance in supplying state troopers.

“Right now in this city where we have 80 shootings and we’re not even at the mid point of the year,” said Eliezer Greer, Edgewood Park Defense Patrol. “We require immediate relief.”

State troopers have gone into Hartford each summer for the past four years. Residents want the same for New Haven, saying there just arent enough local officers to keep the peace.

Under the rules the top elected official or police chief must make the request for troopers but so far city hall says they’re not needed in New Haven.

The city’s chief administrative officer says that Mayor John DeStefano does not favor having state troopers patrol the city. [channel8CT]
