Following an incident in the upstate town of Beacon, where a muslim woman was turned away from taking her photo unless she removed her headscarf, officials at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are sending letters of reminder to their offices across the State regarding all head coverings and their approved use in driver’s license photographs, as per the State’s religious accommodation policies. The women was eventually allowed to take her photo, headscarf on, after she presented paperwork to DMV officials making their policy clear. [nypress]

Previous commenter is correct. A headscarf covers the top of the head, ears, and neck. Face is left open. This is not a burka. It’s a headscarf.

For the purposes of identification, it is more than sufficient, which is why the authorities ultimately permitted it.

the article clearly states that HIJAB is a headscarf, not a burka!

Were not protesting muslims covering their hair,(where identification is still possible, the document serves its intended purpose) We are protesting covering their entire face on a govt issued ID where identifying the person is impossible, and defeats the intended purpose of the document.

How are you going to explain to these self hating leftist liberals that there is a differnece between wearing a shaitel/yarmulke and covering your entire face with a veil.
    I-D stands for I-D-E-N-T-I-I-F-I-C-A-T-I-O-N.

NO I DONT THINK ITS BEING RACIST IN ANY WAY..

The reason of a picture id is to see the face, think about it any person who covers their face in a picture can give their id card to anyone and no one would know the difference, are you kidding me. 20 Different muslim women can share 1 lisence.

covering your hair and covering your face are two very very different things, if the face is covered in the picture, then what is the point of having an ID to begin with? to Identify a scarf??

    These comments are astounding.
If a Jewish woman was told that she can’t get her drivers license without removing her wig first, you would all be screaming “antinomianism!”

The thought of asking a cancer patient to be photographed bald for a drivers license is unthinkable. Yet, the Muslim who feels as obligated to cover her as the Boro Park Hassid somehow is a problem to you.

Any Jew who protest a Muslim covering her hair (for the exact same reason that a Jew does) is a disgraceful bigoted hypocrite.

This is retarted, like someone said before, driving is a privelege not a right and the rules for something like cannot be changed for religious beliefs especially when their covering their face. Just like they make you remove your cap for that picture a face covering should certainly have to be removed.

This is insane its an ID PICTURE for g-ds sake now instead of the picture being of a person its of a piece of cloth.

    RETARTED. SOME RIGHTS ARE WRONG!!

    Sorry-
I wear only scarves & hats and NOT a wig – years ago, I could not take a license picture or passport picture in this way. Now that this is allowed, I have much less problems. So what if these other repressive countries are inconsistent? This woman has chosen to live here, and is entitled to the same freedom you are. Would you be happy if you were told to take off your kipa in court?

This is based on “the right to religious freedom”, so give them their rights and let them walk around with their faces covered all day long.
BUT driving a car is a privilege and not a right! U want the privilege of driving a car, take a picture like the rest of the world.
