My parents were in Morocco relatively recently. My father was treated exceptionally kindly by the people he met while traveling (visiting ancestral graves as well as living cousins).

At one point, my parents were going to get some hummous and bread from a cafe and someone asked if they kept kosher. My father answered ‘yes” . The man went and got a fresh whole fish, cleaned it and insisted that my father accompany him to the kitchen to turn on the fire.

The man then cooked a gourmet feast of fish and rice pilaf and also served an assortment of vegetable salads to my parents. While my parents were finishing their coffee, another man came to the table with an oud.

When my father went to pay the bill, they would not take any money for the meal because the man told my parents that the Jews had treated his family with great kindness and that most Moroccans wished for the Jews to come back.

Last time my parents were in Morocco,(fairly recently) my father told us it felt safer in general than most parts of the US.

My family also travels to Turkey fairly regularly and has felt very there as well.

I’ll be passing by the airport and I’ll be happy to give a ride to anyone on his way back to Poland… or Russia…. or Hungary… or Latvia.. Or any of those dank little places some of us seem to miss. Anybody?… Anybody?

VAST numbers of historical seforim were written by Rabbis and historians from Muslim lands in both Hebrew and Judeo Arabic. (Rabbi Dr. Alan Corre has translated many seforim from Judeo Arabic to Hebrew).

Aleppo, Baghdad and Sarejevo were outstanding centers of Torah scholarship for hundreds of years.

It is sad that our schools, even those who cater to students of Sephardic heritage seem to ignore the writings and literature of Rabbis from Arab lands. Like the history of the Arabs who inhabited pre 1948 Palestine, the history of Jews from Arab countries has all but been erased in favor of a more “Judeo-Christian” rather than Semitic Jewish heritage.

1. 2. No nation/religion has been welcoming and accepting of Jewish inhabitants since time immemorial. Lands and nations have extended invitation during extenuating circumstances (i.e. Latin American countries during the Holocaust) but then were quick to turn hostile once the Jews made it clear that they would not fully assimilate. (Note there were many times that assimilation did not appease the gentiles, Germany before WWII is a clear example of that).
3. The Satmar perspective towards the state of Israel is faith based, not logic based. What individuals such as the members of the NK and our friend Pat (whatever his real name may be) are trying to do is back the faith of their religious perspective with logic and convoluted fact, ergo the excessive reference to selective readings. Debates between faith and logic have never produced productive results and have never led to anything but angst and at best a cold truce.
It is sad though when people in defense of their faith (in this case Satmar fundamentalist’s) begin to bash other people, groups, and ideals that are different from their own. The fact that there were Jewish children from Yemen brought to Israel and forcibly uprooted from their traditions will forever be a blight unto the Zionist regime of the 1950’s, and nobody is in denial of that.
