The case that brought down former Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Gerald Garson, jailed in June for taking bribes, ended in punishment for a "fixer," a rabbi and his daughter, and a disgraced court officer.
Nissim Elmann, the fixer who bragged that he had Garson in his pocket, got the stiffest sentence – 1-1/4 to 5-1/2 years – after pleading guilty to bribery and apologized to the court.
The former court officer, Louis Salerno, convicted of taking bribes to steer cases, was also apologetic as he was sentenced to one to 4-1/2 years. He was handcuffed and carted to jail by his former colleagues.
The last defendants, Esther Weitzner and her father, Rabbi Ezra Zafrani, were given probation and community service as part of plea deals for paying to influence Garson in a custody battle with Weitzner's ex-husband. [nydailynews]
