Parkville, MD – Baltimore County Police fatally shot a suicidal man in the precinct 8/ Parkville area today.

Adam Benjamin Rothstein, 24, of the 8600-block of David Avenue called Baltimore County 911 that he had a handgun and was threatening suicide. Moments later, county police officers found Rothstein walking in the area of Parkville Middle School in the 8700-block of Avondale Road. An officer saw that he was armed with a handgun and had a flashlight. Rothstein told officers that he was also armed with another hadngun and knives.
Police officers talked with Rothstein while Hostage Negotiation and Tactical officers responded to the scene. During the conversations, the suicidal man made several demands and told police if the demands were not met, he would begin shooting.
Rothstein began walking toward one of the police officers surrounding the scene, shined the flashlight, and pointed the handgun at the officer. Two tactical officers fired single shots hitting Rothstein, killing him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detective believe that Rothstein may have been agitated over issues surrounding a recent job loss. The investigation into the motive and suicidal threats, and the police-involved shooting, are underway.
The two officers, 7-year and 10-year veterans, have been placed on administrative leave during the shooting investigation. The officers' names are not being released at this time, pending preliminary investigation of the incident. [WJZ]

You don’t know that for a fact. The investigators concluded that Busch was a danger to the officers.
I am a retired PO (Detective) who did shoot someone, didn’t kill him, he was coming at me with two broken bottles. Just to clarify things a civilian has to retreat instead of engage the perp, If possible. If there is no way out the you do what you have to do. As far as training to shoot the hands or feet as per P.O.K.T….that’s ridiculous, you have never been trained as a LEO. We are taught to stop the aggressor. This usually means causing ones bodily functions to cease. There is a documented case in where a knife wielding perp was shot several times by a Sgt. who held his fire waiting for the perp to drop. Well the Poor Sgt was killed by the perp who wasn’t stopped. As far as EDP’s no one wants to kill an EDP sometimes it can’t be helped. If the situation allows we alway try to preserve life, but we will not do it at the expense of our own. Go home in one piece every day is what we are taught.

We always give the benefit of the doubt to the Police Officers on scene. However, the G. B. case was such a clear-cut case, where he posed no threat at all to POs, and all eyewitness corroborated the facts.

Busch was only holding a small (almost toy-like) hammer, and there
was a distance of approx. 12ft. between himself and the responding
P.O.s. Therefore, he did not pose a threat to the cops.

If ESU was there he would have not been shot
As a gun owner if I shot some one who was weilding a hammer at me I would be charged with manslaughter !!!
To the so called cop:
You are full of it. There is no such a training provided by the Academy. There was a new protocol for EDP’s after the Busch incident, and it merely called for a seargent to respond. Yes we do have non-lethal methods, but those are limited to use by the Boss.

I’m a police officer working with a pct in NYC. We are trained to shoot at the feet and /or hands to knock the guy down or knock the gun out of the hand.
I can’t understand why police officers shoot to kill in situations like this. We are trained to deal with these situations and this is not the way it should have went down.
I can’t speak for other juristictions but this would not happen in NYC after the bucsh incident.

We sincerely hope this is not another Gideon Busch case. In the Gideon Busch shooting, he was no threat at all to the responding NYPD officers. It was strictly an EDP case.
