Monsey, NY – Rockland Mosquitoes Found With West Nile Virus.

Monsey, NY – Eight more mosquitoes collected in Rockland were infected with the West Nile virus, according to results done by the state Department of Health that were released today.

All the insects were collected in traps set by the Rockland Department of Health during the week of Aug. 27.

Six of the infected mosquitoes were found in Clarkstown, one in Orangetown and one in Ramapo, according to Brian Hunderfund of the Rockland Department of Health.

So far this year, 15 mosquitoes collected in Rockland and submitted for testing were infected with the virus.

The department will keep collecting mosquitoes for testing until next week. Mosquito activity diminishes as the weather gets cooler.

The West Nile virus is passed back and forth between mosquitoes and birds. People can get the potentially fatal virus through a bite from an infected mosquito. [journalnews]
