After having stood up as a federal judge for a convicted arsonist who reaped millions of dollars from his crimes, Mukasey is on tap to become the country’s top law-enforcement official. His hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee has contained no mention of the Schlesinger case.
This isn’t part of Mukasey’s dim past; it happened last year. And Mukasey wasn’t the only prominent person to stand up for Schlesinger. Israel’s current prime minister, Ehud Olmert, used his government stationery (when he was merely a deputy prime minister) to plead on behalf of the powerful Brooklyn businessman. [villagevoice]
Was Mukasey confirmed by the Senate?
I don`t get it, is there anything wrong to write a letter of support in order to get leniency for a defendant at his sentencing?
You have these type of letters from the bigest “machers” politicians etc. all the time.

Mukasey is clean as a new white sheet, he wouldn’t get dirty with this non-sense wild guy, this story was fabricated just to bad mouth Mukasey.
Slanted or not, if that’s all they could get on this guy, he must be as good as it gets.

Even according to the VV article itself, it was Schlesinger’s attorneys who speculatively wrote what Mukasey would say IF Spatt would ask him. We have an attenuated disconnect here! It is called “hearsay!”
What the VV says Schlesinger’s attorneys said Mukasey would say is all well and good. But what DID Mukasey actually say (or write)?
Probably nothing! Because Mukasey, as a judge, was required to overcome his base instincts and keep silent. If, per chance, Schlesinger’s attorneys were told by Schlesinger that Mukasey would speak well of Schlesinger; and then, they wrote it in the brief to Judge Spatt, then Mukasey would be damned if he did and damned if he didn’t. By merely speaking to make a clarification, Mukasey would be taking a position on Schlesinger’s case.
The VV article shows nothing directly from Mukasey himself.
