Yahoo! spokesman said that it determined delisting Iran was necessary to comply with new U.S. sanctions on the country.

“So essentially, you can’t choose Iran as a country option because we are restricted from conducting business there — all U.S. companies must comply with this policy,” a spokeswoman said.

    Microsoft had no comment.

Iran remains an option for Google G-mail users. The company said that it did not believe that keeping Iran on its country list violates the sanctions.

This is bogus! Since when does sanctions mean that you can’t send letters (in this case email) to a sanctioned county? It just states that business can’t be done with the offending country.
