Another thing R’ Schmiel, women in Turkey are only prohibited from wearing hijabs in public schools and state buildings. There is no general ban on wearing it everywhere.
I was commenting that Butto was the first and ONLY female head of a muslim state, which is not true. Yes, Turkey has no official religion but it is overwhemingly muslim, albeit secular. It has a very strong Islamist element, as evidenced by for head of state Erbakan, a Muslim extremist. Therefore a female in a place like Turkey is very surprising.

Bhutto elected in 1988. So Bhutto is the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state.
Turkey is not exactly a Muslim state. Although the population is Muslim, Turkey does not have an official religion, or promotes any. Constitution prohibits religious political parties. Woman are not allowed to wear Hijabs (religious headcovers).

well, 4 01, I guess that says it all. The Pakistanis will do anything to get rid of THEIR unwanted politicians. Much as I despise Mrs. C & some other politicians I’d hate to see that again here…remember how it felt when President Kennedy was assisinated & President Reagan was shot at? We register our displeasure/satisfaction when we pull that lever on Election Day.

She was more than an “opposition leader” that makes her sound bad. she is the former prime minister who had been exiled from the country who just returned and was running in the next week’s elections.
