Israel – Followers Make Plane Wait 90 Minutes for Rabbi and His Staff

Israel – A group of ultra-Orthodox passengers delayed for about 90 minutes the takeoff of a scheduled flight from Kiev to Ben-Gurion Airport because their rabbi was late in getting to the airport.

“The passengers were in their seats. The flight attendants were ordered to close the doors when a Haredi passenger suddenly came running from the back of the plane to the front,” a passenger related.
“He ordered a flight attendant not to take off, and to wait for a rabbi who was supposed to arrive,” the passenger said.

“An argument began and [the Haredi passenger] called up several other Haredi passengers, who came up to Business Class. They threatened to leave the plane unless the flight was delayed for the rabbi.”

According to the passenger, about 35 minutes after the scheduled takeoff time the pilot announced that after consulting with Tel Aviv he was instructed to wait for the rabbi, who arrived about an hour later with two or three other ultra-Orthodox men.

The rabbi, a man in his 70’s, according to a witness, took his seat and told his fellow passengers, “Every delay is for the best.”

“The flight was delayed due to the tardiness of a group of about 15 passengers,” El Al said in a response.

“There were about 150 passengers, not all Haredim,” the source said. “I fly El Al frequently and never experienced anything like this, a plane filled with passengers sitting and waiting for a latecomer. What if this were a flight with passengers who had to catch a connection? Instead of landing at 2 A.M. we landed at 3:30 A.M.”

This whole rebbe / chasidus thing is a disgust. Its all fake and phony. Half of them are involved in machlokes and ganeivah. Why should we look up to them? If you take a look at the largest chasidus out there today, there is tremendous animosity between the two, constantly making a chilul hashem for the gentile public to witness. Why does anyone fall for their game? So theres a nice tish friday night, thats it. Get a grip of yourself, be an ehrliche yid and quit all this garbage. Hashem would greatly appreciate someone that respects him and santifys his name versus someone that wears a shtrimel and causes uproars and a chilul hashem.

This is just a Rabbi abusing his kovod and power. None of yesterdays Gedolim would ever make people wait for him. This is not a good example, and this is only casing further hatred of frum yidden and a chillul hashem. Can you image Reb Moshe making an entre plane wait over an hour for them??

    Cutzpah mamash!

I don’t agree with what was done but it’s not fair to assume it was the Rabbi’s will – perhaps his supporters insisted on the delay against his will or without his agreement.

why does it make a difference which rebbi? It doesn’t. El Al should have let the 15 passengers off and and made them pay again for another flight. I can understand anti-semitism being created here by frum yidden. I am becoming more and more self hating every day.

A true godol would never make 150 passengers wait for him. There was once a godol visiting from Israel who was taking a little extra time during shmoneh esreh. Out of respect, the chazzan waited for him to finish before starting the chazzaras hashatz. This later went over to the chazzan and admonished him for making the kahal wait an extra two minutes. He felt bad that he people were delayed because of his extra kavana during shmoneh esreh. That is gadlus!

are you gods spesperson to know that there would have been a crash if they wouldnt have waited? maybe the fact that they eaited meant that they were heading into more turbulence instead of less . How can you know? Rebbes dont cause crashes or prevent them. If you think otherwise your are an apikoros

    1. The plane landed safely only because the Rebbe was on board? Maybe it landed safely b/c the Aibershter wanted it to. Or do we need a Rebbe on every flight to ensure safety?

    2. Did the Rebbe make them wait? Or did his Chasidim do it of their own accord?

    3. If someone gets off a plane it’s a major delay, b/c their lugagge has to be unloaded for security reasons (unaccompanied lugagge not allowed, to prevent non-suicide bombings). So a whole bunch of people threatening to leave is a major threat to the airline.

Since the plane arrived baruch hashem with evrybody on it safly, here is my comment.

Tzadikim have sometomes limited permission what they can release to the people around them some times they can say clear what to and what not to do then at other times they can only act etc. Plenty people where saved from danger in many different ways. Maybe this tzadik had no right to talk but only had permission to arive late to save this plane with all the people.

now we should all do what the mishne says in avos “hevay don es kol ha’adom lekaf zechus” and thank him because he may have saved all the jewes on the plane.

There is a very big problem with many yeshivah education. Yo cannot be a ben torah without learning midos and derech eretz and while these things are learned from the torah, Much of Charedi yeshiva education is a failure because they fail to emphasize this connection. Here is a pure example of this failure. Priorities are wrong, focus is mis-placed.

A true Godol would never THINK of doing that. And the fact that his Chassidim did it shows how little this Rebbe has taught them in ways of kovod habriyos, derech eretz, and chillul Hashem.

A true Kiddush Hashem would be to drop this whole Chassidus nonsense.

And maybe this Rebbe was ill and it was a pikuach nefesh to wait, so the Rebbe could get home peacefully in time for his doctor’s to take care of him?

How about the traffic conditions that brought this delay?

did you people ever even TRY to think positive?

It wasn’t a Rebbe in the true sense of the word. If I recall correctly, it was one of the Breslover manhigim with a group. I was in touch with ElAl during the whole story and there were 2 problems. 1 was that someone had forgotten his passport and then the Rabbi who was late and was bringing it. Normally, Elal would have said get off, but then they would have to offload their luggage which would take even longer. Since they knew that the Rabbi was actually on his way and was arriving, they were told by Tel Aviv to wait. I still think that it is a chilul Hashem. I also think that in general, the behavior of many frum visitors to Ukraine is disgraceful and should be dealt with.

those are not the only choices. There are many modern orthodox yeshivas out there that put Torah and Midos, had in hand at the forefront of education. Unfortunatley most due not (except for Chabad) including those in the chasidic environment.

Personally I agree that the plane should not have waited. However, I see there are some self-hating jews in here that are platzing away that the plane waited. For you guys I say “Yetze Enacho”.

I am glad the Rebbe(?) socked it to you.

btw, For all I care, he may have ben a Shin Bet agent.

Thank g-d I wasn’t brought up in a yeshiva. If that were the case, I’d have no midos. My parents brought me up- the way it should be. You go to yeshiva to study torah.

No wonder the chilonim hat us is correct. In Vienna before annexation by Hitler the Czortkover Rebbe sat with another man on a public bench. A lady came and sat down on the bench. The Czortkover waited briefly and said we have sat long enough let us walk. He did not insult anybody

I agree with Anon. 8:56AM!!! Sorry, everyone else chill out!!!!! Yes, it’s annoying to be delayed 90 Minutes! But, throwing off [potential] terrorists is always a good thing! Perhaps the Rebbe??? in his merit (of procrastination and tardiness) Hashem made a Miracle and the rotten murderers were thrown off guard! As a matter of fact, this is known to be one of El Al’s tactics to enhance security, that they NEVER leave on time as scheduled!!!

Anyone reading the news lately? There was an incident that the pilots who themselves came late and then refused to fly at all because they were booed by the passengers.

Why all this hate for a Rabbi coming late and the flight decided to wait for him? Were any of you haters there that this caused them personal inconvenience? No wonder the Goyim hate us so much, we hate ourselves as well!

    Mr. Cheloni:

Stop trying to blame the observant community for your going off the Torah path. At least be honest with yourself and admit that you just like to pursue unG-dly pleasures. Blaming frum people won’t help you one bit. It will just stop you from taking responsibility for your own actions.
