Jerusalem – A mishmeret tzniut, roughly translated as “modesty squad,” is a vigilante body, usually with some form of rabbinic license, that has taken upon itself to enforce normative ultra-Orthodox behavior.

The mishmeret tzniut derives its power from its ability to identify and manipulate the zealotry of the haredi majority.
There are a multitude of such bodies representing different haredi sects that deal with issues from the eradication of MP-4 and DVD sales in strictly haredi neighborhoods to the fight against ultra-Orthodox pop concerts, from the creation of separate seating in the waiting room of the local post office to the strict supervision of women’s clothing stores to make sure no tight-fitting or otherwise immodest apparel is being offered to haredi females.
All the crusades chosen by the various modesty squads are no-brainers for the majority of the haredi populace. After all, who is not against the sale of potentially lascivious movies in one’s neighborhood? And who is not opposed to the introduction of Western-style pop stars to the wholesome haredi culture?
Rabbinic leadership may or may not buy into the means used by the activists to further their just causes. Even if the rabbinic leaders oppose certain actions taken by the mishmeret hatzniut, they usually cannot publicly attack it for fear of losing their credibility among the public who look to its rabbis to champion haredi zealotry and meticulous adherence to the letter of the law.
In Jerusalem, the most well-known and established enforcer of haredi norms is the Council for the Purity of the Camp (Va’ad Le’ma’an Tohar Hamachane), which was created by Rabbi Yitzhak Meir Safronovitch with the blessing of the fifth Gerer rebbe, Israel Alter, also known as the Beis Yisrael, who passed away in 1977.
It is unclear what connections the council has to the Ger hassidic sect today.
Binyamin Meirovitch, one of the men detained by police due to his alleged connection with the severe beating of a divorced woman, is also connected to the Council for the Purity of the Camp.
Meirovitch owns the Ne’eman printing press that publishes pashkevilim, the black and white notices plastered on the walls and bulletin boards of haredi neighborhoods. These notices, complete with the signatures of prominent rabbis, are the preferred medium for relaying warnings, orders or information from the rabbinic leadership or quasi-rabbinic bodies such as the council to the haredi street.
One of Meirovitch’s employees is Elchanan Buzaglo, who was accused by police of, along with six others, beating the divorced woman.
The rumor on the haredi street is that the woman was beaten because her former husband complained that she was acting immodestly.
Despite the brutality of the beating, as described in the police rap sheet, a vocal contingent in the haredi community took to the streets against what they saw as police intervention in internal matters.
As Shmuel Poppenheim, a spokesman for the Edah Haredit put it, “The vast majority of haredim are opposed to the use of violence.
“But when the iniquities are taking place right next door, anybody in their right mind would do what it takes to put an end to the madness.”
No formal announcement condemning the violence against the woman was released by the Edah Haredit. However, according to the Chadarei Haredim (haredi rooms) Internet forum, Rabbi Moshe Sternbach, a member of the Edah’s leadership, told his students it was permissible to hand over to the police haredi zealots who desecrated God’s name with their actions.
Sternbach could not be reached Sunday at his Jerusalem home to verify the report.
The rabbis should be banned
This v’ad hatznius is like the “muslim taliban”, who enforce modesty.
They should stop looking at the way the women dress rather thewy should look within themselves and see what way they can improve themselves.
Personally, if someone was operating an immoral place of business next door to me, I would be happy if someone had the guts to close it down.
When society had decency laws, such a place would have been closed down by the Police, and decent people would not have had to resort to vigilantism to protect their children from this decadence.
Its a law-less country.
The police (& judges) are often involved in matters unrelated to law, rather to avoid orthodox jews from living their way of life, by finding a way to mask it as a legality.
THE RABBIS ARE FINNALY DOING SOMETHING BECAUSE EVERYONE SEES WHAT IS GOING ON LET THE THUGS ROT IN JAIL
deepthinker-and who are you to deem this an immoral place of business? i dont think you think to deeply in general
This is what our homeland/holyland has become: corrupt leaders, kol lorei warnings, men throwing acid/beating women,Rabbi bannings, no enforcement of army duty due to learning in yeshivah or being a female……
When I was in Israel many years ago a friend from yeshevah and I were talking to a chayal guarding the kotel (The chayal was my friends brother). The Mishmeret Hatzniut came over to us and cursed us in hebrew and yiddish. As we were leaving to get on the Eged bus (not seperate then) they followed us on and said if we were seen again they would make us “pay”(in a very scary way for a teen to imagine). We told her bother when we got back to school and he told us they are out of control and are never held accoutable for their actions.
Im glad finally someone is making them “pay” for their illegal and immoral actions.
Balabusta 7:44PM. Don’t be naive. They will not be reigned in by the same people whose tacit approval they operate with! The Police and the Courts will [reluctantly, from our point of view] do the job! Even though they are not the ideal institutions from the perspective of the Religious Jewish Population! The excessive Bureaucracy [in the Israeli Government institutions] is a major contributing factor to the friction and misunderstanding [and mistrust] between the Haredi population and the Gov’t.!
Frankly, men are afraid of their own darks lusts. By imprisoning women in a machmir world, they think they will find freedom? Notice that the moros in our yeshivos are not the perpetrators of molestation of our children. 99.95% of the time, it is men. How dare these rabbonim – and most of you readers – for not condemning the actions of these thugs. You judge her, knowing nothing, and absolve them? This is how the Taliban think. Wake up – this isn’t Daas Torah. This is insanity.
To AM
yitzchokm:58PM,
Don’t blame men for this problem. There was a case in Austrailia recently with a woman molestor.
There are many fafrumta women who go for this narishkyte more than a lot of men. I read a story on one of these frum news sites where women put on burkahs for tznius purposes and this wasn’t their husbands idea! You don’t have to be male to be crazy!
these vaad hatznius people are the biggest perverts themselves and giving themselves in their minds a kosher way to look at women . i live in israel and i never saw those perverts with the signs telling women not to talk to each other on the street go over to non-attractive women they only go to the preety ones.they should all be banned
and some of us who try to actually work on ourselves and our middos and learn and do mitzvos…. we’re still wondering where Mashiach is…. I guess we now understand what happened during Bayis Sheini!
The Klausenburger Rebbe zt”l said that those who involve themselves too much with tzinious issues, must be thinking too much about women!!
Any organization which doesn’t need to answer to a higher authority even when they resort to brutal violence should be shut down and the wrongdoers imprisoned, period.
Of course the Rabbis only mean the good of their communities. But do they have any idea about the tactics which the thugs they appointed resort to?
And should they find out, will they discontinue to back them?
Think about it.
NOBODY is above the law, and violence contradicts the “Druchehu Darkei Noam” which the Rabbi’s preach.
Besides for the fact that Mayarovich and Bazooglue are known thugs, bend on violence and destruction. Ask anyone familiar with their actions.
I am totaly against the vaad hatznius. I am irritated by non tznius women religous & ireligous (Jewish) walking around chreidi neighborhoods in a provocative manner.
Don’t ban the modesty sqauds. Otherwise, these men will be forced to get real jobs and earn a real living .
It’s amazing how every ignoramous has the right to state an opinion and /or malign Rabbonim. Hate to break it to you guys but JUDAISM is a theocracy not a democracy. So if you wish you can all join moderate Islam
get rid of those thugs, let them take care of their own family,
They really should serve jail time. There’s nothing really lower than beating a woman.
1. What a diapointment that the gedolim are being held hostage and cannot speak their minds and guide according to the real derech Torah. I am a black hat charadei but am becoming more and more disenchanted with our so called leadership. We are live in a generation of close minded askanim who mislead and misinform the Gedolei Yisroel. These askanim for the most part are murdering people and destroying Klal Yisroel. Because of these goons I can no longer believe anything whether verbal or written in the name of the Gedolim. They have caused the erosion of respect, especially by the younger generation for the Gedolei Yisroel. Sometimes I am embarrassed by their behaviour, which does not have any Godol backing them.
These Taliban charadi have caused more chilul Hashem and caused more people to go away from Yiddishkiet than all chilonim put together. Nowadays we live in an open society, we do not chas veshalom have to be become like that society but we do have to learn how to deal with it, otherwise we will remain in forever in our uneducated and poverty stricken ghettos.
