    As part of the mayor’s initiative to cut back on city issued parking placards, City Hall is vastly reducing the number of permits issued to schools by more than 80 percent, from about 63,000 to just more than 11,000.

    The city says the DOE exceeded the number of parking permits to available spots by six to one.

    Now, it will be up to the principals and teachers’ representatives to decide who gets the privilege.

    “So, if there are ten available spots outside the school that are reserved, we’ll make sure there are ten permits for those spots,” said Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler. “That way we won’t put people in positions where they think they have a privilege in places where they don’t.”

    “I’m actually surprised at Ed for talking about it that way,” said American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten.
    “Ultimately what has happened here is there are 25,000 parking spots right now in the city of New York for school teachers and as of next week there will still be 25,000 parking spots for school teachers.”

    In an effort to cut down on parking permit abuse, the mayor called for the city to cut the number of permits by 20 percent.
    The city says it’s now reduced the number of city-wide parking placards by more than half and it has centralized the permitting system to cut back on abuse.

    The DOE has a month to institute the new parking policies.

    why should school teachers be different then any other guy going to work? let them look for a parking space like any regulat jo shmo of the street, and let them deal wih ticket harrassment that every other citizen goes through each and every day of the year.

    They should take away the permits from everybody fair play enough with protekzia.

    they should also ban faculty vehicle parking from private schools & yeshivas as we have on our streets a store owner on 13 av still needs 2deposit in meter so a teacher/rebbe/menahel shouldn’t b any different

    To 8;24 first of all in the last few years the city has put no standing signs in front of schools. Those that still say facilty parking are grandfathered in. Secondly the biggest chuzpa are the yeshivos who park their busses overnight and on weekends in front of the school which is illegal and the neighbors have no place to park.

    to 8:04 do you mean to say because I can’t have so neither can you. My children sometimes act like that. The fact is that if they are parking in front of or on the sides of the school they won’t have to take away from the residents of that ara parking spots.

    To 8:04 yes, certain professions deserve perks the teachers who put up with our kids are one of them.

    Taking away the permits won’t help anyone else, since the reserved spaces still remain reserved. You still can’t park in school spaces! All this means is that those who still have permits will have an easier time finding a space.

    As usual, the government “press release factory” fools the gullible into thinking they are being served.

    9.02 certain proffessions deserve……. perks……., sound like you are a teacher, look 95 percent of the teachers are there to make a living, and thats their job, so what? If I have to put up with my boss everyday whats the difference? now you sound to be very bright, explain please whats the difference between someone that works for the city and being fed from the public but they put up with the kids everyday, (8 months a year)and lets say someone working

    in the private sector, putting up with his boss everyday whats the difference? genius.

    Thank you for bringing out that point , Its unbelievable what a chutzpa these Yeshiva buses have they not only park in front of schools overnight, they park in any available space taking away parking from all of us

    If you open a yeshiva then get a yard where to park your busses – as all established Yeshivas have.

    What a scam – they get rid of the placards but leave the signs that allocate space for teachers to park –

    Of course the only ones who can park there — you guessed it — teachers

    The school will just have to have a talk with the local police precinct and bingo – free parking anyway.

    How about taking away free parking from city council members and their staff and State representatives and their staff – let them feel the pain of looking for a space.

    Yeshivah busses parking in front of schools is wrong and dangerous;

    It’s wrong;

    I don’t have a reserved space in front of my house and business neither should they. The schools enjoy enough grants perks and subsidies at the expense of the broader public and taxpayer’s. Why do the immediate neighbors have to put up with such a large inconvenience at their direct expense?

    It is dangerous;

    Because School busses are much wider and taller than cars and they block the view of oncoming traffic for pedestrians that need to cross and they block the view of drivers so that they may not see pedestrians crossing into the roadway in between the busses. Try the buss valley, 50th Street between 13th and 14th ave.

    Busses parked in front of intersections with a stop sign are an immediate hazard to all drivers and pedestrians entering the intersection.

    Excuse me there’s no reason why people who live on the block of a public school should not be able to park on their own block and have to move their cars at 7 AM no less in honor of the teachers. let the teachers either carpool or use public transportation which by itself would be a good lesson to the kids.

    What do we get for putting up with a stupid comment like yours.

    Teaching is a voluntary choice and it’s a profession like any other no preferential treatment should be granted especially when it inconveniences other law abiding citizens. Thank you

    Anon 12.08 very well said.

    anon 9.02 sounds like a real dummy, because you are a teacher so you deserve certain perks because of the profession……

    from his writing he definitely meets the criteria of a teacher in the SYSTEM, and he deifinitely has a brain like a typical teacher in the system.

    Now anon 9.02 while you are in the teaching profession…., please when you come to work everyday from now on try to find a parking space like any other unprofessional citizen that lives in the area, on the other hand maybe the school system will lose you as a professional, because you wont have that perk anymore…

    Yeshivah busses parking in front of schools is wrong and dangerous

    according to you; you would say that a van or a truck should be able to park in front of the school & when the child comes or goes from school the bus should double park or block the street for 20 minutes untill all kids go on the bus just like when u go to public schools or by spchial ed school that take time to load the handicap kids.

    now lets think how this would work; when the children will in school the mosed would need to hire more staff to watch when the small children are coming down that no one should go under a car lets say if his recas fell downwhen jump down from the bus & the child picks it up & the driver didnt see him god for bit then you woud say its the schools falt,

    next when the children will go down from the bus the driver needs flashing lights & he cant go untill he & the teacher on the bus will check if nobody is left on the bus how long does this take.

    whats doing behind this bus if the school is on a main street he blocks the street then the cars start yaling & blowing the horn that a driver should close his flashers it comes to urgements etc.

    now if the school has 3 4 or 7 buses how long does it take to unload the children from the bus.

    now if you would have a child in that school you would’t think sso selfish.

    have understanding with the mosdos the have responsbilty’s and that why they are asking for for this parking spaces

    its about time they are taking steps(only baby steps)its a step in the right direction. for instance i live in a block where there is a public school which goes from the middle of the block until the corner so now you can park on that block from 7-4 but not only on my block but on the other side of the building you cant park and on the ave which means basically ur taking away almost 20 PARKING SPACES…. i am not finished then i have a yeshiva around the corner which takes away another 10 spots and then 1 1/2 blocks away another yeshiva so thats a total of 40 spots taken away from our neighborhood….. then i dont have a drivewya and then the chutzpah is that ppl with driveways decide to park on the street so think about what us citizens have after a normal days work not like the teachers have basically a part time job off 2 months in the summer etc… so if anything we should get the privileges… its either all or nothing
