The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) said Coke made a range of claims that go beyond those allowed by the Food and Drug Administration.

“Coke markets VitaminWater as a healthful alternative to soda by labeling its several flavors with such health buzz words as ‘defense,’ ‘rescue,’ ‘energy,’ and ‘endurance,'” the group said in a statement.

Atlanta, GA – The company also claims the drinks reduce the risk of chronic disease and eye disease, promote healthy joints and support immune function, CSPI said.

“In fact, according to CSPI nutritionists, the 33 grams of sugar in each bottle of VitaminWater do more to promote obesity, diabetes and other health problems than the vitamins in the drinks do to perform the advertised benefits listed on the bottles,” the consumer group said.

This is not Coke’s first run in with the group. In 2007, CSPI sued the company over claims that its Enviga brand burns more calories than it consumes resulting in weight loss. The suit is still pending.

Coke purchased Vitaminwater for $4.1 billion in 2007.

This is another frivolous lawsuit that should be tossed out of court. Coke bought this company about a year ago. If this group was soooooo concerned they should have sued the previous owner but I guess the ‘profit’ wouldn’t be as big.

There were television ads long ago that said Doctors RECOMMEND smoking…If you say that vitamin water does something it doesn’t (like provide a daily amount of vitamins) then it is false advertising…in other words…”It ain’t Kosher”

Oh, good grief. How did I know before opening the article that it would be about CSPI? Honestly, the minute I see CSPI in a story I know there’s nothing to it. Responsible news organs should not report on CSPI’s doings, any more than they report on the doings of Charlie Buttons. There are nebech some sick people in the world, who must be humoured but not taken seriously, and CSPI is like that. They get their jollies from scaring people, and convincing them that the world is a scary place full of bad things. It’s a machleh by them.
