I was wondering about this since the crash, lol!! It says in this post though that “belongings left behind…could be stuck with investigators for months”- but does that mean that like in 6 mos or so, there is a chance that they will get their lost belongings back?? Just curious…

That is such wonderful news. This is just what I was so concerned about.
How much these people have to go through to redo all their personal identification cards, and replace things that may not even be replaceable, and have the trauma to hesitate flying again. Did this bonus come with the stipulation that no lawsuits would be allowed once accepting the money? $5,000 for a lifetime of fear of flying? And what did the hero pilot get? He should get millions! (He probably will after all the interviews, book deals, etc.) The airline should be commended for its customer service, and for having such experienced pilots. We should continue to marvel at the miracle of every “normal” flight and landing. And however we travel, we should appreciate the safe arrival and departures that we take for granted.

Anyone who has ever experienced shoddy treatment from an airline is happy to see an airline try to satisfy its’ customers. I agree with #4 about the anxiety. A few years ago, I was in a pedestrian/auto accident and I was the pedestrian. Surgery and physical therapy helped with the physical injuries but I crossing streets brings back memories.

    1) If they want to sue they can sue the birds

    2) I wonder if peta will sue the airline for killing the birds

$5,000 should just about cover the cost of the laptop and all the software and business information that is on it.

US Airways is not being generous under the spirit of good customer service, they are managing risk. This is a ploy by US Airways in order to avoid legal liability. By accepting the $5k you agree NOT to sue the airline. In light of the report last night there was a problem with the engine 2 days prior to the accident, the $5k doesnt seem generous at all.

I think it is a fair offer. For MOST people this will more than compensate them for lost items.
Obviously, for some, this will not cut it. People may have $6,000 worth of tefillin with today’s tefillin prices. Top quality, custom-written, tefillin can TODAY run in the $2500 – $3500 range per pair. So, a pair of Rashi together with a pair of Rabbaini Tam, together with a nice tallis with a Sterling Silver Atara, and you can easily wind up with over this $5000.

Or, someone travelling to or from an affair (wedding or such) may have their best Jewelry, worth any amount. The ski is the limit.

The problem is that these people will need to not take the $5000.

But also, does anyone here have an airline ticket on hand?

What is the Liability limit on checked luggage?
What is the Liability limit on carry-on luggage?

We need to know that, the legal limits of the airline’s responsibility before jumping to any conclusions.

If the limits are way below the $5,000, and they customer would not be able to recover much money anyway, then the $5,000 is generous.
Hopefully, the person carrying very expensive items, has them insured on their homeowners or tenant’s policy, with separate floaters.

So, anyone with a ticket on hand, or any travel agent, enlighten us. What IS the airline’s limit of financial responsibility for luggage and/or carry ons????

It was a true neis that the plane didnt crash over land and potentially kill thousands of people, let alone not one person on board died.. this is an amazing story. For the airline to reimburse is also menschlichkeit. They could have declared it an “act of G-d” or something atheists use to get out of obligations.
