The indiscriminate barrage of rockets and mortar shells, which haunted southern Israeli communities for years, was horrendous and unacceptable, said Ban during a tour to the Israeli border town of Sderot, a target of frequent rocket fire.
While noting that such attacks against Israel violated the basic humanitarian law, the UN chief also urged the Jewish state to lift its crippling blockade upon the impoverished Palestinian enclave, where reside some 1.5 million people, with some half of them refugees.
Earlier in the day, Ban visited the Gaza Strip, which braced for massive devastation during Israel’s three-week blistering military offensive starting Dec. 27, 2008 and described the scenes as “heartbreaking.”
Ban urged Israel and the Gaza-ruling Hamas movement to exercise maximum restraint to maintain the shaky ceasefire, which has roughly been kept in shape since the two sides separately staged their truces on Sunday.
Israel said it launched the Gaza offensive, dubbed Operation Cast Lead, in response to the continuous rocket fire against its southern land during the past eight years, and has conditioned any long-term ceasefire on an end both to such attacks and Hamas’ rearmament.
How long was this man the head of the Oom?
When and how often and with what language and to whom did he ever speak about the mortar fire of the Arabs on southern Israel?
yeah, they really love us…dont they? its just unacceptable to indiscriminately fire rockets. where is the UN scrambling to an emergency session to condemn hamas? Ha! what a fake organization. they were lucky the plane didnt hit the UN last week. let them get the message. as for us, we need to shape up and bring Mashiach closer. i recently found a new forum called BringMashiach.com whose goal is to help us become better to bring Mashiach closer.
Why don’t Gazans take the money spent on weapons and build an infrastructure?
It seems they do not want to?
If Israel disappeaared tomorrow the leaders of Hamas would have to actually help their people and they may not the best at it and would lose thier positions (like the Mraglim).
Just some thoughts.
Don Ki-moon said that the rocket fire from the Gaza Strip at southern Israel was unacceptable.
Gee how much did he pay for his position!?? That was such an intelligent comment.
Smart man! how long did it take him to figure this out…
I’m really glad that he said that Gazan rocket fire at Israel is unacceptable. If he hadn’t said it we wouldn’t know. I find him disingenuous of equating a State trying to defend itself (from him too), with a terrorist organization shooting rockets at civilians indiscriminately. He says that he finds it heartbreaking. Does anyone here believe that he had problems sleeping one night in the last month? How much lower can a UN chief get?
I still don’t understand why Egypt is not being pressured to open its border with Gaza. They don’t want Hamas in their country and Eretz Yisroel should!??
Oooooooooooooooo it only took him about 8 years and 9000 rockets to figure that out! Watch out folks, we got a smart one.
Mr. Ban-Ki (ober noch vus far a Kiiiii) Moon is a Dollar short and a day late… as the saying goes.We haven’t heard one, just one European or UN leader come out and unequivocally condemn the actions of hamas. Say it openly and unequivocally and logically. The day the rockets from hamas will stop flying into Israeli cities, is the day that the Israeli army will leave the Gaza strip!!!!
what an appropiate name, Moon has his head in the clouds!!
What a yemach shmoe! Rockets are unacceptable and against humanitarianism? What kind of language is that? The whole UN is unacceptable and against humanitarianism. UN troops are the worst soldiers and do not care about their mission. I do not want to see them in Gaza or Egypt guarding the border.
