Washington – Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi boldly defended a move to add birth control funding to the new economic “stimulus” package, claiming “contraception will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.”

Pelosi, the mother of 5 children and 6 grandchildren, who once said, “Nothing in my life will ever, ever compare to being a mom,” seemed to imply babies are somehow a burden on the treasury.
The revelation came during an exchange Sunday morning on ABC’s THIS WEEK.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus?
PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children’s health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those – one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.
STEPHANOPOULOS: So no apologies for that?
PELOSI: No apologies. No. we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.
If reducing the population will help the economy, she should set an example and do her part – commit suicide!
Let’s start with Pelosi’s kids. Sterilize them. Set an example to the rest of us.

Hey guys can we all relax for a second? I understand that some of us may have a religious problem with birth-control, but nowhere does it say that speaker Pelosi must subscribe to our beliefs. As a matter of common sense, she is 100 percent right. And as a matter of ethics-morality there is nothing wrong with what she said and the comments by numbers one and three are uncalled for.
Is Ms. Pelosi suggesting forcing people to use family planning services? If so, that’s terrible; otherwise, what exactly is the the problem with making family planning services available? I assume this means contraception, because according to law terminations may not be funded through taxpayer dollars. I agree with #5 that contraception is much better than abortion from any point of view: moral, economic, and medical.

I do not have a problem with public funding for contraception — but by slipping this into a supposed “stimulus” package, instead of into a health services appropriation bill where it belongs, Pelosi is being a typical politician, i.e., a dishonest, devious weasel. Using her twisted “logic”, virtually any government expenditure, no matter how useless, stupid or corrupt, can be labled “stimulus” if someobeody, somewhere can make a few dollars off of it (as in this case, pharmaceutical companies and organizations like Planned Parenthood do). Even the disgraced Ted Stevens’ infamous “Bridge To Nowhere” could be justified as “stimulus”, since someone would be making money and providing jobs by building it.
When the defense budget comes up for debate, will Pelosi and the other dyed-in-the-wool anti-defense liberals approve it on the grounds that military spending is, in fact a big stimulus to the economy (think of how many thousands of people work for companies getting defense contracts) — or will they sing their usual song about how keeping our military strong and well-equipped so we all can remain free to criticize our government and its leaders (a liberty NOT enjoyed by people iving under the control of those whom we fight against) is somehow “wasteful Pentagon pork”?

Why is she being allowed to define abortion as “birth control” when it’s not just that, it may be a form of killing and murder, especially when they abort babies already about to be born and could be viable?
Birth control means other things, as many people know, and it does not need to be abortions for profit with government help that will just divide this country even more.

I’ve been reading VIN for some time now and have tried really hard to hold it in, but I must say that the commenters on this site suffer from an extreme case of am ha’aratzus. Do none of you learn Rashi on the parsha? Don’t you remember that Rashi (Bereishis 41:50) says that we see from the fact Yosef refrained from having children during the famine that it is prohibitted to have martial relations during a famine? This is based on the gemara in Taanis (11a) where Tosfos clarifies that this is something that need only be observed by someone who wants to be a chosid.
Now I don’t know if our situation should be considered a time of famine like the gemara is referring to. But its certainly an idea to be discussed that is not without merit and has sources in our own tradition. I don’t agree with a lot of what Pelosi stands for, but it drives me nuts when people villify and use extreme language when they are totally uninformed on the issue.
Bottom line – go open up a sefer!
What you have to also realize is that what she is doing and what the entire democratic party is going to continue doing is blame every ounce of frivilous spending on a stimulous package. This will do nothing to help the economy it will only further the liberal agenda to end social responsibility and allow the government to enter everyones homes and private lives.

I am not sure how contraception will reduce costs unless she really believes that free BC will be more attractive to people than having children. There are times when even those who want many children are forced to use BC so I am sure that it is a savings to them to be able to get it for free. As to “useless eaters” there have already been cases where families are being pressured to allow doctors to pull the plug on “brain dead” patients. I don’t equate that with offering contraception to those who need to avoid pregnancy. I don’t see any difference between offering free BC and free vaccinations, or any other free preventative care.
Actually she has it all wrong. The Baby Boomers are causing us grief as is social security. Folks don’t have babies, there will be no one to support old Pelosi when she loses her youth and becomes old. That is why in Jewish thought having kids can be a demanded right for a spouse — because someone will need to take care of that person when he/she ages. One of America’s biggest challenges is having the workforce to pay into social security and support our seniors. And since many selfish folks decided not to have children, there are more seniors being supported than can be supported by the monies going into social security. So not only is Pelosi a Mirsha’as who is going against the Borei Olam, she is a dumb politician too, who hasn’t done her homework.

It is known that Dayan Fisher from the Eida Hachareidis was more lenient in giving heteirim for birth control. When asked how he could be so lenient, he said that if all the Rabbanim would be aware of what happens to the mother/both parents/children when they just keep on having children and can’t physically and emotionally manage, then they would also do the same.
So before all these people start crying bloody murder, stop and think for a moment. If people are having kids and are not being able to take care of them and then as a result they are abused, given up for foster care or adoption, what is the purpose? Just to populate the world with suffering souls? Instead, these parents (or single parents) should wait until they can handle the responsibility of being a responsible parent, and until then avail themselves of the option of birth control.
