London – Irish carrier Ryanair, Europe’s largest budget airline, might start charging passengers for using the toilet while flying, chief executive Michael O’Leary said on Friday.

“One thing we have looked at in the past and are looking at again is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door so that people might actually have to spend a pound to spend a penny in future,” he told BBC television.

He said this would not inconvenience passengers travelling without cash. “I don’t think there is anybody in history that has got on board a Ryanair aircraft with less than a pound.”

O’Leary has a reputation as a cost cutter, expanding Ryanair by offering low headline fares and charging extra for items such as additional luggage.

Last week, Ryanair announced it was to shut all check-in desks at airports and have passengers check in online instead.

“We’re all about finding ways of raising discretionary revenue so we can keep lowering the cost of air travel,” he said.

They might save money by charging for the toilet but they do NOT realize how much they will pay for cleaning the carpet after every flight……….:)

Watch out when you travel with them. They have serious hidden luggage restrictions that can cost you over a hundred dollars.

very funny! Next thing you know is the pilot making an appeal – for the honor of turning off the “fasten seat belts” sign, so people can get up to pay a pound to use the bathroom. How about charging for getting OFF the plane – talk about a captive audience! 🙂

I was expecting this to happen. How silly can they be?
You’d have a choice not to take any luggage, not to buy a snack or a drink. But this?
Go to the toilet before you get on a plane. DON’T FORGET

How will they charge? Will you need to swipe your credit card before you go in, or will you be locked in and the door will only open if you pay? I have heard that the food stands will be selling Depends as an alternative prior to boarding. Eventually they will charge extra for a seat that has a flotation device under it. You will also have a choice if you wish to sit in a row where the oxygen mask drops upon a sudden loss if cabin pressure.

ryannair flights are typically between 40 min and 1:20, most people can hold it in that long.

I don’t see the big deal. Where do you think the expression “spend a penny” means? All public toilets used to be for pay, and still are in many places. A pound isn’t a lot of money if you need to go, and as the guy says nobody flies without at least that much on them.

That said, this is probably a joke.

Next they will charge for the oxygen masks and lifevests.

Airlines don’t get it: it’s all about the passengers. Make the passengers miserable, and your next stop is – bankruptcy.

The last time I flew, that policy was not in effect. What a relief!

The change in altitude usually causes people to HAVE to go – this way they collect a pound per customer per flight.

    100 seats = £100.

The next invention should be a mini automatic carryon toilet. As other airlines might foolow up on this idea.
