The latest measure announced by the National Authority for Road Safety: clocks installed next to traffic lights informing the pedestrian how much time until the light changes color. The installation of such clocks around the country will first be done on a trial basis, after which the authority will evaluate its effectiveness.
The Authority director, Yair Davidi, explained the focus on the pedestrian, “Since the beginning of the year, pedestrians are 44 percent of the dead from car accidents.” Because of these shocking statistics, the authority decided to focus its latest measures on pedestrians.
Yidden will simply use the clocks to paskin that if there are 10 seconds left on the “don’t walk” sign than thats a heter to start walking rather than simply guessing if there were 10 seconds left.
um….. about time they caught on. We have had it in the US for a while already. The best thing would be to teach them how to have some courtesy.
Ah a yiddishe kup once again.
Do you know that Israel, and Great Britain have had the same number of Deaths due to car accidents this year? Do you know that Great Britain has TEN times the amount of human beings living there, than in Israel? The reason for the accidents is because people dont obey traffic laws. In thin narrow streets, a car will speeeeeeeeed when they back up. Or Speed down a street full of children playing. Or start gearing up, and subsequently driving before the lights change, or a second after the lights change. They need to start seriously ticketing and cracking down on repeat offenders. That will save lives.
This is a waste of money. Yes, some will say OK, I have 10 sec , and start walking some will say “Maybe the clock is wrong and I really have 11 sec, or more. Seriously, unfortunately, we have been programmed to think… I can drive anyway I want the “Abishter” is watching… I don’ thave to worry He’ll take care of me and anyone in the way. BUT you have to do your part. Nothing is that important in anyone’s life that you can put you, your family or anyone else’s life in danger. No matter where you live … Israel or the US do your part, and the “Ribono Sheloylom” will do his part to protect you.
SOME place in the US do – and some don’t! Don’t get your knickers in a twist people.
The numbers allow people to know how much time they have to cross – some people need more time and some streets are wider than others.
I think its a great idea & should be implemented at all traffic signals everywhere.
Maybe there should be a button for the pedestrian to reset it to another 25 seconds or so.
miami has it all over, its great
The first time I saw this was when I was in TAILAND on a stopover! Its actualy quite clever.
If it helps in reducing accidents it should definantly be adopted.
