New York City – An MTA finance committee has voted to raise transit fares.

The cost of a single subway or bus ride would increase from $2 to $2.50 under the plan passed Monday afternoon by a committee of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The price of a monthly MetroCard would go up to $103, from $81. The increases would take effect June 1.
Gov. David Paterson and state lawmakers are at odds over a deal to head off the fare increases. The Legislature has until Wednesday to agree on a plan for closing the MTA’s $1.1 billion gap.
This is not great news but probably the best outcome to fix the budget. The state assembly and Sheldon silver have blocked the bridge tolls to Brooklyn and Queens so there is no other place to get the money needed to subsidize the subway and bus fares. Maybe with this extra money they might experiment with adding one extra car to trains to BP and WB for men who don’t want to ride in the same subway cars as women. It would not cost a lot of money.
And what makes you think that cars traveling the bridges are responsible for this?
Let them pay for their own rides, just like the people driving pay for their own expenses…

Maybe a competitor with free trains with seperate seating. they did it in jerusalem with the kottel buses.

Real estate prices are falling out of town and there are beautiful communities with schools mikvaos and cholov yisroel. No tolls reasonable taxes and normal standard of living (can you imagine actually living!!) Time to learn and enjoy your family and be activaely involved in your bais medrash.
Do your research and you will find that there are many many nice communities.

This is crazy. A 25% fare hike for the subway is unreasonable, and will hurt the poorest people the most. How about limiting the fare increase to under 10%, and increasing tolls and parking meter fees instead? Perhaps taxes can be increased on cigarrettes, loose tobacco, and alcoholic beverages?
I’d like to point out that the subway fare went to $2 in 2003, SIX years ago. What else do you know has had a price unchanged in six years?

Is a train ride less valuable then a danish and coffe that you pay today $2.50-3.00?
why don’t they entertain the thought of cutting expenses such as employees who aren’t needed like in any other organization?. They should be forced to lay off workers before raizing fares
To make it more efficient I propose separate subways just from Williamsburg and Boro Park. If they don’t allow, separate subway lines can be built just for frum – private -like El Al and Jerusalem bus. There are many big donors who would give for that.
An extra car or 2 on the train? I think its a great idea! They should charge $10 to use those cars. Maybe everyone else can avoid having to pay such high prices! If you want to be so machmir, you should be more than willing to pay for it. Somebody should bring this idea to Bloomberg!

Why is it so hard for the MTA to turn a profit? Since I have moved to New York in 2001 the only noticeable difference I have seen in the subways are the led signs on the L line, the elimination of tellers, the elimination of the token, and the fare hikes up to soon to be $2.50. I remember when the MTA was caught a few years ago keeping two sets of books, one to display to the public and the media, and the others a secret version showing the MTA had a surplus of cash. So where does all of the MTA’s money go? In this new economy can we continue to fund this type of ruthless corruption? If your answer is no contact you representative. It only takes a few minutes to jot off an email your local congressman and senator by emailing you can do more in a few minutes that years of complaining to people that cannot do anything about it…
