It’s true, says 1010 WINS’ reporter Sonia Rincon, who witnessed the “magic” turn on with her own eyes — and needless to say, it’s extremely dangerous.
When Andrei Melnikov’s Sony Erickson PDA is within about two feet of the stove, an incoming call will make the Maytag Magic Chef stove beep, and the digital display will light up, indicating that the broiler is on high.
The Maytag repairman is scheduled to take a look at Melnikov’s oven this afternoon and 1010 WINS’ reporter Sonia Rincon will be there for the house call.
Open it up and you’ll see the gas flames streaming out of the broiler’s burners as it begins cooking anything inside it in 500-plus degree heat.
The first time it happened was last Monday. Melnikov says the phone was sitting on the kitchen counter when it rang. As he answered it, he remembers hearing a faint beep, but as he walked away and spoke with the caller, his mind was on the conversation. Minutes later, he smelled smoke.
He checked his computer and other electronic devices in the apartment on his way to the kitchen. He knew he hadn’t turned on anything in there.
But his phone apparently had. And the kitchen was filling with smoke.
When Melnikov ran into the kitchen, he found a piece of plastic cookware left inside the oven on fire, which he quickly removed and doused with water. He called the landlord, explaining that somehow the oven had turned on by itself. Once the landlord was in the apartment, Melnikov remembered the phone call. A test call later, and the culprit had been identified.
Both Melnikov and his wife Lina, who was not home when this happened, say even though this is the first time it happened in the three years they’ve had both the phone and stove, they can’t sleep knowing this might happen again. They fear for their pet chinchillas, and are thankful Melnikov didn’t walk out the door with the oven left on.
They are keeping the stove unplugged, but plugged it back in briefly to provide me a demonstration.
Melnikov says he has spoken with the Maytag company which has promised to send out a repair team and identify the problem.
Maytag spokesman says this is the first time the company has have ever heard of the issue and they are looking into it.
This is true: If I put my iPhone next to my bedside alarm clock (and even calculator) it makes the numbers change by themselves, as if possesed. I think it has to do with the digital radiation emitted when there is data activity. Soon enough it will truigger dangrous things. Which is why FAA says to turn off cell phones on planes during takeoff.
a couple of months ago had some problem with the faucet by the kitchen sink,
my plumber sent me his rookie apprentice to take care of it,after working on it for a couple of hours,he finally told me its all fixed and a-ok.
after he left,i opened the faucet, and instead of water coming out a terrible smell of gas came out,and when i opened kitchen stove, guess what?water started gushing out from the oven, since then we have used our oven instead of the sink, and the sink as our oven
sounds like picking up a radio frequency from a filling after a visit to th dentist
I believe it! My Norelco shaver turns every time I get a call or text message if it’s sitting near my cell phone!
ask the talkling fish from monsey
Now there’s a solution for cooking on yom tov without leaving your oven on for 48 hours. Just have somebody call your cell phone at the time you want the stove to turn on.
Just make sure not to put it next to your head
I’m sure its the bluetooth that is interfairing with these products. Bluetooth is programmed to search for devices. In the process it send out a signal to all devices in order to find your trusted wireless devices (i won’t go too much into how it works). In my advice turn bluetooth off on your phone and test it. I’m sureit won’t turn on the oven after that.
Dose this guy live in apartment building? don’t forget they have so many cell phone anttenas all over the place it must be so power full if your close by.
if this is what happens when cell phones are next to electrical equipt, what happens to our brains????? i shudder to think about it!
NOW do all you skeptics believe how powerfully dangerous cell phones are??
I had a case when I made a phone call to a friend and the flour and eggs jumped out of the fridge and into the mixer. The next call turned on the mixer and the next call turned on the oven. Unfortunately the sugar did not respond so the cake tastes terrible. And it glows in the dark too.
My wife pointed out to me that every time I put my blackberry down the toilet flushes…
Should I call a plumber or stop reading the news (and commenting 🙂 everytime I go…)
I think you need a fire wall to protect your oven
