New York, NY – 7432 Nabbed in Cell Phone Crackdown

New York, NY – New Yorkers are using their cars for a lot more than driving.
Cops issued 7,432 tickets during this week’s 24-hour crackdown on drivers caught yakking or texting on their cells while behind the wheel.

“I bought an earpiece this week – just in time, it turns out,” said 42-year-old motorist DelRay Smith as he watched a cop pull over a driver on the West Side Highway.

Getting caught with your hands on a cell instead of the wheel now costs $130, up from $120 just six months ago. Taxi drivers are held to an even higher standard. They can receive a $200 summons for using even a hands-free phone while driving.

The blitz marked a dramatic increase over the 580 phoning-while-driving tickets the NYPD issues on an average day.

A recent University of Utah study found that motorists who talk on cell phones – even using hands-free devices – are as impaired as drunken drivers.

The crackdown, which ended at 12:0l a.m. Friday, brought in fewer tickets than the 8,797 issued during a similar sting in March.

No big deal to get to this amount they give out orders for every cop to give out a certain amount of tickets & if he had no luck giving out this certain amount ,he just pulls u over for no good reason & tells u uset the cell phone.

I don’t want to see cops issuing tickets for cell phones, while every cop talks on the phone while driving. If the would do a blitz campaign on cops, it would be more theg 8 thousands tickets issued. (get the point)

“A recent University of Utah study found that motorists who talk on cell phones – even using hands-free devices – are as impaired as drunken drivers.” – can anyone explain this lie to me? While texting is certainly a danger and using a cell phone (non hands free) is maybe slightly a danger, there is certainly no danger in hands free! Unless you are a woman and desxribing a dress

Good for the police. It’s high time. The ticket for texting while driving should be even higher. Too many lives have been lost or ruined by drivers who can only see what they want to do at the moment and don’t care about the danger they are posing to others.

How about police officers? I don’t remember seeing a police cruiser without being on a cell!
