Washington – Toyota says it will recall 3.8 million vehicles in the United States to address problems with a removable floor mat that could interfere with the vehicle’s accelerator and cause a crash. The company says it will be the largest U.S. recall in its history. Owners could learn about the safety campaign as early as next week.

Toyota and the government warned owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles about safety problems tied to the removable floor mats. They say the mats could interfere with the vehicle’s accelerator and cause a crash.
The recall will affect 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon, 2004-2009 Toyota Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES350 and 2006-2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350.
Owners should take out the floor mats on the driver’s side and not replace them.
Toyota’s previously largest U.S. recall was about 900,000 vehicles in 2005 to fix a steering issue.
oohhhh…
thats japan!
NOTE that if it were a GM safety issue it would not be recalled because they are no longer responsible for safety defects, even if they were known to GM and even if they result in death. Thanks to Washington.
do I understand correctly? are they recalling entire vehicles over a floor mat?
I heard a radio report about what prompted this: a state trooper made a 911 call that his accelerator onhis toyopta was stuck and teh car went increasingly faster up to 120 mph until the drvier lost control and went over an embankment, kiling the driver and his two family members. The cause was believed to be this mat. I heard the call: it was chilling
It is so true, it happened to me several times since I leased my ’09 Toyota Camry recently. I thought it was my foot screwing up all the time, but in truth those mats and the leg curve design are responsible. Alright then, let’s see what Toyota does next.
are they sending letters to owners of the affected vehicles or do you just drive into a dealer to get a new one?
In my 09 camry you cant turn of the engine while driving unless you switch it to neutral.
are they going to give owners new mats?
This happened to me in my 07 Toyota, it was very scary car was zooming forward uncotorolably i held the break and b”h i was able to stop the car.
I read an article on Yahoo where they recommended:
The Japanese automaker warned owners that if they think their vehicle is accelerating out of control, they should check to see whether their floor mat is under the pedal. If a driver can’t remove the floor mat, Toyota advises drivers to step on the brake pedal with both feet until the vehicle slows and then try to put it into neutral and switch the ignition to accessory power.
For vehicles with engine start/stop buttons, Toyota said the engine can be shut off by holding the button down for three seconds.
