New York – Charges of espionage against US Defense Department scientist Stewart Nozette reflect “extreme views” against Israel that could harm US-Israel relations, former AIPAC staffer Steve Rosen told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.

Rosen, AIPAC’s former foreign policy chief who was accused, with Keith Weissman, of passing along classified information, said it was revealing that Israel was inserted into the narrative of Nozette’s entrapment and subsequent arrest. The case against Rosen and Weissman was dismissed last spring.
“One of the things that our case revealed is the very extreme views that are held by some in counterintelligence agencies of the CIA and FBI about Israel,” Rosen said. “They believe that the Mossad spied on the US on a huge scale and they believe that the Pollard case was the tip of some sort of iceberg.
“When you keep repeating that the Mossad is spying on America, Israel is harming the United States, of course it harms the alliance between Israel and the US,” he continued. “The current case is even more peculiar because the government of Israel did nothing.
“It’s revealing that they used Israel for the sting,” Rosen added. “They could have used China, or others. But they chose Israel.”
Describing an “obsession” with Israel within certain parts of the CIA and FBI, Rosen said if his own case had gone to trial, details reflecting the extreme views of his investigators would have come out. “There was no wrongdoing,” he said, reflecting on the case against him and Weissman.
“But we go through this all the time. There is a faction in the counterintelligence bureaucracies that is fomenting these tales,” he said. “They are methodically trying to create the impression that Mossad is under every bed.”
Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, said the Nozette case is part of a “troubling” pattern of targeting Israel and Jews as potential spies against the United States.
“I am not naïve enough to believe that there aren’t efforts to obtain information in all kinds of ways,” Foxman said. But, he asked, “Why is it that we don’t hear of any other country, except for Israel? I find that troubling.”
The US Defense Department has repeatedly singled out Jewish employees for possible disloyalty, Foxman said. The situation has escalated, with increasing cases of Jews having difficulty obtaining security clearance. If you have relatives in Israel, speak Hebrew, or practice Orthodox Judaism, he said, “changes are, you won’t get clearance. That’s the mindset out there.”
Weissman’s attorney in the AIPAC case, Baruch Weiss, said he knew very little about Nozette, only what he read in media reports.
However, “this case certainly raises the legitimate question of whether this was a legitimate sting or whether it was an unfairly selective sting aimed at Jews to test dual loyalty,” Weiss said.

Let’s be honest about this. They set out in this case to entrap somebody and some COUNTRY. That country was Israel.
Just to try to implicate that somehow America is infested with people that are spying for the Israeli Govt.

According to the deposition, Nozette both worked for an Israeli company, and told a colleague that if in trouble, he would flee to Israel (or “country A”, where he is suspected of having delivered material as well).
The FBI claimed to be Israeli operatives because the suspect had already indicated that he was thinking that way. They couldn’t be “country A” because if he was delivering material, he already had someone he was working with.
If he had mentioned planning to flee to China if in trouble with the law, you can bet that the FBI would have posed as Chinese intelligence.
Oh, one last thing. We know that the ring running Pollard had at least one other agent (and lied about that to the United States) because he was caught last year. So if American intelligence thinks that there were more agents than Pollard, well, we know they were in fact correct.

CIA and FBI has the right to be paranoid about Israel just like they are against China. Abe Foxman should open his eyes and stop imitating Al Sharpton. There were several cases not long ago of FBI arresting 4 Asian American engineers and scientists for giving away classified info to China on things like B2 stealth technology and other trade secrets. Did AIPAC forget Win Ho Lee that FBI arrested for passing nuclear secrets to China?
Israel and China are known to be one of the most aggressive when it comes to espionage with in the U.S. Israel has easier access than China, Russia or Iran. DOD became paranoid after several Jewish senior scientists have been VOLUNTARILY passing highest scientific secrets in the 70s, 80s, 90s. Then you have these Evangelicals who volunteer to pass info to Mossad because they think it is their religious obligation to help Israel.
One has to understand the mindset of a CIA/FBI employee and understand why they are paranoid. I have a bridge to sell you if people believe that Israel does not spy on the U.S. EVERY COUNTRY spies on friends and enemies. The fact that innocent Jewish employees lose their clearances in the government is a sad reality when these things happen, but that is how counter-intelligence works. A lot of paranoia and extra precaution is involved.
Every time the government arrests a Frum Jew or Israel related crime, VIN bloggers start throwing the Golus or Nazi card, like someone is rounding up Jews in Miami.
The problem is more that they announced that he was arrested for trying to deal to Israel, when Israel was not involved. They could have just said, Arrested for attempting to pass information to a foreign country. They purposely mentioned Israel to hurt public opinion.
