New York – A northern New York county clerk is carrying out an online petition drive to thwart Gov. David Paterson’s plan to require all New Yorkers to purchase new license plates next April.

St. Lawrence County Clerk Patricia Ritchie said it’s an outrage to ask families and businesses to pay more for new license plates they don’t need or want when they are being battered by the ongoing recession.
Beginning April 1, the state will begin requiring new license plates for every one of the estimated 10 million cars, trucks, trailers and ATVs registered in the state at a cost of $25 – a $10 increase over the current cost.
Ritchie said more than 5,000 people have signed the petition in the first week to protest the new license plan.

What nerve! I am being told when to buy new license plates! next they will tell me when i can go out for a drive or wash my laundry to! I am going to sign that petition right now for i thought i live in a free country, i guess my freedoms are being taken away one by one. i can understand if paterson wants everyone to get new plates if he offers a trade and switch program, but to buy new plates just like that no way!!!

The cost in previous years to replace your plates when mandated by the government to change was $10
Now if this bill goes thru it will cost us $25
We have approx 25 million registered cars in NY
do the math 25million times $25 equals…………..
there you go a profit so the government can air mark the money for their favorite pet projects

Reply to #4 … Now read this less slowly – although you are correct in stating that it is “only” 10,000,000 cars – however it is a $25 increase per car! Think of it this way – if this law does not take effect I don’t have to get a new plate, hence my cost is $0. I still have to pay a renewal fee, but the $25 fee they are referring to is for a new license plate.
In New Jersey they have never made us get new plates. When they change the design, they simply make all the new plates with the new design, but the old plates are still valid.
You can see Jersey plates of all vintages still on cars today.
This waste of tax payers money and the additional costs associated with it will seal Gov. Paterson’s attempt for relection….not going to happen David!!
I run a small business and I am fuming with anger over this new fee from NYS of $50 to allow us to display our Sales Tax ID and collect their sales tax!!!! We have to fill out more paperwork too and now, they don’t bother sending our ST-100’s anymore. I did not realize this until I was too late. Guess what? Now I will have to pay $50, plus, a late charge of AT LEAST 10% of what I collected in sales tax. Isn’t this illegal for a business to charge that much if for example I was late paying a bill with them? And what gets me is that they don’t send ya the ST-100 after we pay them $50 to collect there sales tax for them. This just kills me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would like to know if anyone out there wants to fight this with either a petition, or standing on there steps with ugly signs. I have a great sign in mind, I’m into marketing anyway.
The governers spokesperson says if voted down it could turn into 120+ million in taxes on people. I’m sorry but this seems like a hidden tax to me. Just a nice way to hide it and give governer patterson some play money.
I’m a Democrat and I do get it. Mr Patterson wants to raise some money so he and his cronies can miss spend our hard earned dollars. The way to save money is to take away all state issued passenger cars, private drivers and make these State employees use their own cars and keep mileage records of official business and they can submit them for per mile compensation. This would save a lot of money, repeatedly over many years and would be money that could fund real needs.(like roads to drive the cars on). Also I vote across party lines when needed. reducing state cars is also green. Patterson does not stand a chance in a real election. His poor judgment has doomed him. Cut un-needed government positions, perks, and swelled up benifits. Decrease taxes for businesses and draw job into NYS instead of pushing business out. Give tax breaks to businesses based on the number of jobs they create. Vote with your head and heart. : )
If you don’t pay the extra $20 dollars, the plate number on your existing registration will NOT MATCH the new license plate number. Does this mean either pay the extra $20 or be forced to re-register your vehicle so the plate numbers match???? I think this needs to be checked out immediately!!!!! Does anyone have access to this kind of info?
Just tried to sign the petition and it said it was “broke”. What is that? New Yorkers need to gain back control of our govt. Demand Paterson’s resignation, and State Assemble and State Senate should be fired w/o any benefits etc. Get our money back. Taxation without representation, and misappropriation of public funds.
My Fiancee and I work hard everyday trying to pay for our dream wedding, however recently he was laid off because of Govern Paterson making cuts to state programs. My fiancee builds state vans. This License plate expense will kill us finacially, we barely have food in the house now. We are already so close in filling for bankrupcy and we worked hard to have are credit so good! I feel we are working just to pay the state and I’m ready to leave the area for that reason….I can’t take it! Stop the madness…..
