In fact, in a Wednesday court hearing, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 48, who lives on the North Side, will offer more than $1 million in bond security as well as witnesses who will testify about his clean record and reputation as a businessman as part of a bid to be freed from jail, his attorney, Patrick Blegen told the Sun-Times.
Blegen on Sunday responded for the first time to a growing chorus of media reporting that a federal investigation is probing whether Rana and David Headley were involved in the Mumbai attacks which took the lives of more than 160 people a year ago this month.
“Mr. Rana categorically denies involvement in the tragic events in Mumbai of Nov. 26, 2008. He harbors no ill will against the people of India and continues to have close family ties to the country,” Blegen said. “In recent years, Mr. Rana’s career has been geared toward assisting members of the Hindu and other communities to become legalized and established in the United States and Canada. Mr. Rana has worked hard and traveled extensively to attempt to build his business. The Indian communities in Chicago, New York and Toronto are a testament to his hard work.”
