Oct. 14 2009 Photo Credit: The Jewish StarLong Island, NY – At 3:58 on Wednesday afternoon, Judith Greenberger was in her office when she received a phone call from her cleaning lady. Two men had broken into her house. A neighbor saw them run through the glass back door to a vehicle waiting on West Broadway, carrying pillowcases and shopping bags.

When she arrived home minutes later police cars were parked around her house. In the middle of the afternoon, in broad daylight, the thieves had ripped the deadbolts off of her front door; four upstairs rooms were ransacked.

The day before Greenberger’s home was hit, two armed men locked a mother and her infant in an upstairs room while they robbed her home; the woman had left the door open to take her other child to his school bus. A month ago, two men dressed as utility workers tied up a homeowner in Hewlett as they robbed his house. The recent spate of burglaries has placed pressure on the Fourth Precinct, which includes the Five Towns.

In a sharply worded letter to Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey, Legislator-elect Howard Kopel asked, “Is [the] Nassau County Police Department taking these home invasion crimes in the Five Towns and elsewhere throughout the Seventh Legislative District seriously? … What demonstrable steps has NCPD taken to combat them?”

“It has been going on for a while now,” Koppel said. “I only know what I’ve read in the newspapers and what I’ve read is unacceptable. “

I’m afraid to even leave the door open for my kids to come in off the bbus. Then again, I’m afraid to leave it closed, lest they be attacked ch”v on the walk up the driveway.
    Re: The Truth-
Are you from around here? Do you even know where East Rockaway is, b/c it’s really not that scary unless you afraid of conservative and reform Jews??

looks like we have to do teshuva, we were sitting calmly a few weeks ago when the Jewish Star hosted a hateful editorial against other Jews because of our different views in certain yiddish subjects, calling on a “boycott” on our own brothers. maybe this is what brings this new wave of crime on the community?

Maybe if the police officers were actually patrolling during their shifts instead of just parking their cars alongside each other in groups of 2-3 cars to shoot the breeze… These are the highest paid police officers in the entire state, and they’re too lazy to even drive around the neighborhood. If I were a burglar, I’d be cleaning up all over the 4th precint while the overpaid police are packing down the donuts.

That is why I got a Pitt Bull. that lives in my back yard in a dog house. And yes, we are religious Jews, and the neighbors though we were crazy here in Brooklyn, but as you can see there was a reason for getting him. By the way for 3 yrs. now there have been no robberies on my block thanks to my dog…

I live in Cedarhurst but I grew up and lived in Kew Gardens Hills until I was 35 so I’m still a city boy. I lock every window and every door whenever possible. When I take my kid to the bus I lock my front door. You can’t be too careful.

By the way, these 5t crime waves happen every few years. They’re doing as many as they can before the cops start cracking down.

All these guys are good at is giving out tickets and avoiding real police work. When they’re on the force, they manipulate their work schedules so they’re off for 60% of the week. Then when it comes time to retire, they all work 100 hour weeks in the last year, so they can pad their pensions.
