Buenos Aires, Argentine – Six Tombs Destroyed in Jewish Cemetery

Buenos Aires, Argentine – Six tombs in a Jewish cemetery in the Argentine capital were vandalized, a community leader said.

Julio Schlosser, general secretary of the AMIA organization, told the Jewish news agency that the tombs were vandalized in the Liniers cemetery, in the western part of the city.

“They completely destroyed them. They lifted off the lids of the tombs and dug the earth from the graves, something never seen before,” he said.

Schlosser emphasized that whoever profaned the tombs left no “anti-Semitic graffiti,” and he added that the deed was a “very worrying” act of vandalism.

The Jewish community in Argentina, the largest in Latin America, was the target of two terrorist bomb attacks in 1992 and 1994.

The first was carried out against the Israeli Embassy and resulted in the deaths of 29 people, and the second destroyed the AMIA headquarters, killing 85.
