Wiesel has also called on Hungarians to reject the small extremist groups that have grown in popularity in recent years.

The far-right Jobbik party won nearly 15 percent of the vote in European parliamentary elections in June. It’s also expected to win seats in Hungary’s parliament next year.

Wiesel is on his first visit to Hungary in over 60 years. He was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944 from a small village in Romania – which was then under Hungarian control.

Wiesel, whose father was Hungarian, was speaking Wednesday at a conference in Budapest.
