New York – In response to reports of Israeli extremists vandalizing an Islamic mosque in the Palestinian village of Yasuf, the following statement was issued by Mr. Stephen Savitsky, president, and Rabbi Steven Weil, executive vice president, of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America:

We condemn the reported acts of vandalism, in which Israelis are alleged to have entered a mosque and set fire to its carpet, destroyed holy objects and wrote hateful graffiti messages on the walls. There is no justification for such actions.
Jewish synagogues and holy sites, in Israel and across the globe, have been similarly vandalized and desecrated over the course of history and, thus, Jews should know very well that such actions are beyond the pale.
We support the efforts of the Israeli authorities to investigate this matter and bring those responsible to justice.
What if this dispicable act was perpetrated by Moslem extremists seeking to inflame the Islamic world? What if this was done by agent provocateurs seeking to paint all ‘settlers’ as enemies?
Excuse me? Why a statement when the situation has yet to be investigated? “Alleged” means just that.
Did they say they were condeming a specific person or group? No!
They were condeming whomever did this? What’s your problem with that?

It was these same fools that made derrogatory remarks about Rubashkin, sending the message to the Feds that it’s ok to pursue them. What qualifies Savitsky as a spokesman for anything? We didn’t hear the ou deal with all the scandals of misbehavior in the US (including the many, many year sex abuse of our kids by their employee until it became public). Israel doesn’t need American jury to give additional press coverage to an embarassing and highly unusual misdeed. Savitsky should review the restraint of trade and competition practices of his organization and whether he has a right to tax Jews and others to a profit tune of 30-60 MILLION dollars! Let’s hear an accounting statement on that!
We must condemn terrorism *by* Jews just as we condemn terrorism directed *at* Jews. I salute the OU for this timely statement.
There is a moment when silence can be the most appropriate response…this is that moment…please RE-educate the OU leadership to exercise restraint of their lips and gums in the future…toda..chag semacha…
