Washington – Obama’s Anti-Semitism Czar Blasts Israeli Ambassador to the U.S.

Hannah RosenthalWashington – The new State Department anti-Semtism czar (you didn’t know  such a thing existed?), Hannah Rosenthal, publicly criticized the Israeli ambassador in Washington, Michael Oren, for criticizing J Street, the left-leaning Jewish lobbying group.

In an interview with Haaretz in Jerusalem, where Rosenthal was the administration’s envoy to the Foreign Ministry’s Global Forum for Combating Anti-Semitism, Rosenthal, who once served on J street’s board of directors, said she opposes blurring the lines between anti-Semitism and criticism of Israel.

“It is not 1939,” she said. “We have the state of Israel. We have laws in countries that are holding people accountable.”

When Ambassador Michael Oren turned down J Street’s request to be keynote speaker at its first annual conference, and chose not to attend, debate over the group, already intense in the American Jewish community, reached as far as Jerusalem.

Obama’s national security adviser, General James Jones, gave the keynote speech at the conference, while Israel sent a low-level official, claiming that J Street works against Israel’s interests.

Rosenthal, who also served on the board of directors of left-wing group Americans for Peace Now, said she believed Oren “would have learned a lot” if he had participated in J Street’s conference. “I came away realizing what a generational divide there is and I don’t know how it is in Israel. Young people want to be part of the discussion, they feel they have fresh ideas and they feel that we have to end the stalemate,” she said.

Rosenthal strongly believes that new and different voices need to be heard regarding Israel in the American Jewish community. “We need to have as many people coming together to try and put an end to this crisis, the matzav [situation] can not continue – it’s unacceptable and that’s why I always paid my membership to AIPAC, but I have always paid my membership to Americans for Peace Now – because they all need to be supported and they all need to be at the table.”

“We may disagree on different paths to get there – but we need to at least admit that peace is the goal and security is the goal,” she said.

Rosenthal, 58, who held senior positions in the Department of Health and Human Services during the Clinton administration, said she met Obama in Chicago when he was still a senator. She said criticism of her appointment in the Obama administration, from the leaders of some American Jewish organizations, was “from a very few people who blog a lot.”

Although she did not say outright what she thought Israel should do regarding the peace process, when pressed, she said: “I lived in Israel in 1973 in the bomb shelters. I don’t want my kids or my grandchildren to have to ever come visit their homeland and to live in a bomb shelter – that is what I mean when I say the matzav … Sometimes I wonder what it does to the psyche of people and children to know that they have to know where the nearest bomb shelter is – that’s not okay. As a peace loving person and as a Jew who wants my kids to feel comfortable here – I think that’s what I mean that the matzav cannot continue.”

Rosenthal’s position, founded during former president George W. Bush’s term, was upgraded by Obama when he symbolically moved her office to the same floor in the building housing the State Department where Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has her office.

“We have seen huge increases in anti-Semitism. Research shows that 46 percent of the population in Spain has negative views of Jews – in Spain. Two days ago it was reported that anti-Semitic incidents in France more than doubled last year. Ninety-five percent of the Jordanians and Egyptians have negative views of Jews. How can we hope to get to this goal with this climate,” Rosenthal said.

When asked to comment on the view of some in the Israeli government that the Goldstone report was anti-Semitic, Rosenthal said: “I do believe that some of the criticism against Israel is anti-Semitism but not all of it is. And I think that healthy democracies – and Israel is one – has to do self reflection and the world looks at the light unto the nations and says I agree to this policy or I don’t agree – that is not anti-Semitism. But having the UN single out Israel for 170 resolutions over the last five years – when everybody knows that Sudan is committing genocide and they have only five resolutions. When Israel is the only agenda item on the human rights council – I think it’s legitimate to look at this singling out, holding Israel to a different standard than the rest of the world. I think that crosses the line to anti-Semitism.”

“But it is not anti-Semitic to look at a certain policy of Israel and say – I disagree with it. Half of the population in Israel isn’t anti-Semitic by not agreeing with policies,” Rosenthal said.

Rosenthal’s father is a Holocaust survivor, the sole survivor of his family. “I said to my father at this point – ‘dad how did you survive?’ And he turned to me and said – ‘I survived to have you.’ This is why I am so driven and have a feeling of urgency for this issue,” she said.

although i don’t agree with her on a lot of issues but i do agree that Israel should be more careful with their policy’s as we all know when their is any conflict in Israel the worldwide jury suffers badly like in Europe and in many places the anti-semitic attacks goes up drastically it just not fair that the worldwide jury should have to take the burden of the Israeli policies

She describes Eretz Yisrael as her family’s “homeland”.

She calls out the UN “human rights” organization as promoting anti-Semitism.

She understands the anti-Semitism that pervades Europe and the Arab world — even in countries that are supposed to be at peace with Israel.

We should be paying her to give speeches all over the world!

Whatever her reasoning, she should not have criticized the ambassador in public. The first comment should have made mention of that.

Let’s see if Ms. Rosenthal’s Holocaust father taught her about neechum aveylim and see if she calls the wife and SEVEN children of the man innocently killed today. She would first call an arab family
with condolences. So would Obama and Clinton.

Youre all wrong, you guys all think its Israel that has to change and Jews are at fault. Weve done our part more than once including Gaza, it has NOTHING to do with Jews. And everything to do with the OTHER side. Thats the mistake with JSTREET.
Yes, Oren is Right and Rosenthal is wrong!

The first appointed official of this administration with whom I agree. She is correct in stating that Israel should reflect on some of it’s policies and make changes. Not everyone that disagrees with you or critisizes you is “anti-semitic”.

I find it hard ot beleive that she as a employee of the state department would criticize the ambassador ofIsrael to th eUS in public.

She seems to draw a connection between Israel and the increae in world wide antisemitism.blame the victinm for the world hating her.

Amazing how she seems to admit reality but then goes on into some never-never land about peace with the Arabs. Does she know that the Arabs were collaborating with the Nazis, who killed her family before the ’67 war and before the state of Israel existed?

Who is she to represent my intesrests? She’s a nobody. Probably doesn’t even light Shabbos candles. Who is she to tell Jews how to protect themselves? She’s a Jew in name only. Why doesn’t she become a macher in the PTA or something like that to keep herself busy! Keep your grubby hands of Israel!

Jstreet does not represent the Jewish position on Israel or political issues. Their
leadership is intermarried and celebrate with bhudist Seders(?). They are stronger advocates on behalf of Arabs than Jews

It is a travesty that Obama picks an intermarried woman to be his Anti-semitism czar. Then again this would be typical of a Peace Now member or a J-Street supporter of Jewish Obama supporter

    1. The ambassador didn’t criticize J Street for being anti-Semitic, he criticized it for not working in the best interests of Israel. So her objection that “not all criticism of Israel is anti-Semitism” is attacking a straw man.

    2. She’s a left-wing hack, planted there so as to validate every Obama Israel policy.

    3. “She said criticism of her appointment in the Obama administration, from the leaders of some American Jewish organizations, was ‘from a very few people who blog a lot.'”
Who are the organization leaders that she belittles her critics by dismissing them as people who blog a lot?

Please google this lady and you will find out that she is an extreme leftist who has made some very controversial remarks about Israel and the Jews in the past. Jeffrey Goldberg, who is certainly no right winger, slammed Ms Rosenthal on his blog on the Atlantic site in saying that it is incredible that her first act as “anti_semitism “czar is to criticize the Isreali Ambassador, an unheard of breach of protocol.
She is a shill for the J street/ Nyilas (hungarian nazi) uniform wearing Soros and the entire crew of far left J Street crowd. J Street is so radical that even the far left Jewish parties in Israel have disclaimed their positions.
They are the new Erev Rav and would probably throw up at the sight of a Haredi or Chassidic dressed person.

She is so proud of herself that she knows one Hebrew word, matzav. She keeps using it. It seems that’s all the Judaism she knows. Unfortunately she is just an example of the “matzav” that left wing Jewry finds itself in.

“It is not 1939,” she said. “We have the state of Israel. We have laws in countries that are holding people accountable.”
After reading this I was in shock. How naive are these people who lead the country? Law that hold people accountable are only as good as the willingness to enforce those laws? What is even more disturbing is Czarina Rosenthal’s failure to understand Ambassador Oren does not speak as a private citizen. If anthing Czar Rosenthal’s background belies a history that at the very least can be described as anti Zionist. It is not Anti Semitism if Moshe Feglin or Minster Barak disagrees with the Prime Minister. It is another when the criticism is based on a non Zionist narrative or supported by groups hostile to Israel and if you are supportive of a 23rd Arab country especially in light of what is clearly a hunger that is never sated you are not working in Israel’s interest and siding with those who subscribe to terror , violence and death to Jews.
If Czar Rosenthal wishes to stem terror and rid Israel of bomb shelters push for a solid Israel one that does not bow to Washington or anyone else . Let there be Jewish State run on Democratic principles takes its rightful.

Dissolve the position, save money, and let her find a real job. There is no anti Islam czar, there is no Anti Christianity Czar, there should be no Anti-semitism czar. There is one cause of anti semitism. Jew not folloeing the torah. This is outlined in the toichacha. “al tivtichu binidivim biven odom she’aon lo tishua”; “ol mi lihisha’ain? Al avinu she’bashamayim” And yet there are some people who claim to be orthodox and campaign for a Jewish president, who will help them like Sharon helped the settlers.

Does this mean that President Obama has politicized Anti-Semitism? Scary thought when one considers the implications.
