Forty-six percent of New Yorkers say that religion is important in their lives, the eighth-lowest figure in the country.
The Pew Research Center used polling data to rank the 50 states on four measures — the importance of religion in people’s lives, frequency of attendance at worship services, frequency of prayer and absolute certainty of belief in God.
Pew interviewed 1,933 New Yorkers. The New York portion of its survey has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
Mississippi ranks as the most religious state, with 82 percent of its residents saying that religion is important in their lives. New Hampshire and Vermont are tied at the opposite end of the list, with only 36 percent of their residents listing religion as important.
