Israel – No Compensation for Rabbis Presiding Over Weddings

    Israel – Starting this month rabbis employed by the state are prohibited from receiving compensation for presiding over the wedding of a couple living in that rabbi’s community.

    Along with the Justice Department’s new regulation that just went into effect, the Chief Rabbinate published a list of rabbis who are approved to preside over marriages.

    If the government is going to insist that everyone MUST be married by an orthodox rav, there is no legal or ethical basis for a rav who is already paid by the government to charge extra for performing keddushin. To to otherwise is mamash ganavah. This decision is long overdue.

    When a secular cousin of mine in Israel got married a few years ago, the rabbi told her in these words: “Make an envelope for me and put something beautiful in it.”

    That’s real classy, and helpful for kiruv too. [sarcasm]

    When Rabbi Swift in Pittsburgh does a wedding, he refuses payment. I think he is just happy to be invited.
