Johannesburg, S. Africa – The internationally respected jurist who accused Israel of war crimes in a U.N. report says he will attend his grandson’s bar mitzvah now that he no longer faces protests from Jews upset by the report.

Richard Goldstone told The Associated Press on Saturday that his planned presence at the Jewish rite-of-passage ceremony in South Africa is possible because protests against his attendance were called off.
Goldstone, currently teaching in Washington, has faced criticism in South Africa and elsewhere for finding that Israel committed war crimes in Gaza in 2009. Goldstone concluded both sides committed war crimes and possible crimes against humanity.
Goldstone is retired from South Africa’s Constitutional Court.

I’m glad they worked out the arrangement to allow him to attend the family simcha. We shouldn’t allow legitimate political disagreements to determine who can come into a shul for a bar mitzvah.

honetsly, the world at large thinks of him as a very well respected, and respectable jurist. I think that while all that may be true, he is a big ferd. To take on this job, he was in a no win situation. Had he sided with the Palestinians, the world answer would be “Jew – what did you expect”. the slightest veering the other way, and you have the Jewish media attack him as a self hating Jew. Why he did not refuse the job is beyond me.
I also wonder #16 why he didn’t refuse this job.?
The Shul in question can BH make a Minyan without the judge, especially on Shabbos. I think that he was not going to be given an Aliya in any case.
I in no way shape or form condone what Goldstone has done to hurt his fellow Jews and Israel…but shouldn’t the decision to allow him to attend his grandson’s Bar Mitzvah be a family decision…we can all debate it.. but it really is a private matter or have his poor past choices really disallowed him to attend based on Jewish law as others have indicated???
So who cares about the grandson? Does anyone mind that this child would have been subjected to public shame and embarrassment if his grandfather attended, and private disappointment and pain if he didn’t?
Are people so concerned with their “self-expression” that they have no rachmanus on a thirteen-year-old boy? What kind of impression of Yiddishkeit and Zionism would this have made on him? Or would he have evetually turned away from us with the opinion that all we care about is politics and our own agendas?
There are plenty of ways of :”punishing” Goldstone, and none of them should involve innocent famliy members.
