New York, NY – A fired-up Mayor Bloomberg warned the U.S. “is committing national suicide” by passing the buck on implementing comprehensive immigration reform.

Hizzoner delivered the blunt message Wednesday as he criticized Arizona’s harsh new anti-immigrant law.
“This is not good for the country. I don’t agree with it,” he said. “We love immigrants here.”
Bloomberg said that because federal lawmakers have failed to tackle the thorny issue, lawmakers in states like Arizona have taken matters into their own hands.
“This country is committing national suicide,” Bloomberg said.
The Arizona law allows cops to stop anyone they think is in the country illegally and arrest folks who can’t prove their immigration status or citizenship.
Bloomberg deemed it an invitation to harassment.
“We have to get real about the 12 million undocumented here,” the mayor said. “We’re not going to deport them. Give them permanent status. Don’t make them citizens unless they can qualify, but give them permanent status and let’s get on with this.”
Bloomberg spoke as he thanked volunteers at the “Citizenship Now!” hotline sponsored by the Daily News and City University of New York, which helps callers who want to know how to become citizens.
He called on President Obama to lead the fight to overhaul the nation’s immigration rules. “I will be there behind him supporting him 100%,” he said.
Bloomberg long has been a supporter of immigration reform, saying current law deters international companies from sending employees through border hassles to work in the U.S. – and freezes out the highly skilled immigrants America needs.
“We don’t have doctors, and we’re not allowing people who want to come here and be doctors to come here,” the mayor said. “This is just craziness.”
“People are developing new drugs in India, rather than here. They’re going to win the next Nobel Prize in China or in Europe, not here. If we want to have a future, we need to have more immigrants here.”
So please explain me what privlige we have as an American, me as a taxpayer gets less from my country. Here’s how it works no insurance, No public education, Nothing at all but these illegal people get whatever they want they take up all the Hospitals cause they don’t have any insurance. This is one of mayor bloomberg’s politically motivated statements. I find it to be hypocritical and dishonest as well. Bloomberg has no problem with the “stop and frisk” policy currently practiced by the NYPD which (un)fairly targets Blacks. The policy only requires that an officer ‘suspect’ the individual is commiting a crime or acting in a suspicious manner, wherethen he could be stopped and searched.
The Arizona law states that an officer may question an individual only after lawfull contact with an individual; traffic stop, entrace to a secure building etc. If the individual produces valid ID (proof of residency), that’s the end of the story.
The problem is that often (not always) people who are stopped, may be in possecion of illegal substances drugs, narcotics, guns, vehicles or may be in fact in the process of commiting a crime.
Mayor Bloomberg should be consistent, instead he’s trying to court Hispanic/Latino sympathy.
Bloomy, again you are just pandering to the Hispanics. The Arizona law is exactly what the states SHOULD be doing. Checking suspected criminals for immigration status and turning over every illegal they find to the INS. (I.e. if you are in the country illegally you are, de facto, a criminal … you have broken our immigration laws). Arizona is merely forcing the US Government to do it’s job. Protect the borders and deport illegal aliens.
Next opportunity I find I will vacation in Arizona, I hear the Grand Canyon is something worth seeing.

Bloomberg lives in the real world and the rest of you do not. There is not a way in the world that you can “round up” millions of illegals and “ship them back to where they came from”. This is a pipe dream — a fantasy that may serve to make you feel tough, but has no applicable bearing. Take all the illegals out of NYC and watch how quickly half the service businesses shut down. Have you ever walked into even the kosher restaurants? they are stocked with illegal workers. Do you have any idea how reliant the agriculture, manufacturing, and construction industries are on these people? This is the truth. It may not be pretty and it may not be ideal, but the only way to resolve this problem is to design some sort of path to residency as George Bush bravely attempted to do. It will force illegals to pay at least some fines and future taxes and is the only realistic solution to this problem in the long run.

Wow. Such ridiculous comments here. Let me start by saying that all illegals either need to get legal, or get out ASAP.
That being said:
1. My grandparents came here illegally. They could not get into the US so they got to Canada instead. Then they crossed the border and stayed with family. Had someone randomly asked to see their “papers”, under this law, they would have been sent back to Poland for slaughter.
2. Many of the illegals in this country are here under similar circumstances as my grandparents. When may of you write about “illegals” you seem to think of Mexicans and Muslims. How about the African women who come here to escape genocide? These women are forced into sexual slavery and are forced to marry their rapists who beat and abuse them. Should we just ship them back?
This law is the cowardly way out. Even the police in AZ are against it because studies show that it will INCREASE violence toward police. Illegals will be more inclined to run or fight/shoot their way out of a situation. Cops plan to fight it in court.
However, I can say I am happy to see SOMEONE dealing with the issue. I just wish they weren’t so stupid and cowardly about it.

Hey, Washington. A major part of immigration reform is to make the process of applying for green card and citizenship much simpler. As of today, it is a nightmare.
Hey, naysayers. Anywhere you go, you are asked for “government issued ID”. Try flying on an airline or renting a car. How about entering office buildings, applying for a job, going to a hospital or even a doctor, almost any transaction at a bank, etc? The Arizona law is not a “stop and frisk” bill. It states that if there is otherwise a legal reason for an individual to have “police contact”, that such ID and proof of citizenship can be sought. What’s so hard about that?

My family waited our turn on line- why should these people cut the same line we waited on? We should have high walls around the country with wide doors. If we stop the illegals from coming in, we can then allow more people to come through legally. Our country can only hold so many immigrants at once. Put all the people on a line. If you are a criminal, drug dealer, without a proper source of income (this refutes bloomberg’s idea of doctors not being allowed in)… you can’t come through the doors. But, if you are hardworking and want to make a better life for yourself in America and follow American laws- sure, they can come right in! For those not zoche to be born here, being a permanent resident or citizen is not a right- it is a privilege. Follow the laws, wait your turn and GET OUT IF YOU WONT.

Even after being notified by the goverment, they cannot fire the employee but need to wait 60 days so he has another chance to prove he’s here legal.
