Brooklyn, NY – Orthodox Jewish leaders are furious with Mayor Bloomberg for pulling $16 million worth of day care vouchers that he restored last year — just two weeks before Election Day.

“Definitely, we feel betrayed,” said Joel Rosenfeld, an employee of the Bobov yeshiva in Borough Park, Brooklyn.
Bloomberg pulled the vouchers, which serve 2,200 mostly Orthodox children in Borough Park and Williamsburg, during budget cutbacks last year.
But in June, under pressure from advocates, he extended the deadline to Dec. 31, 2009.
In October, the mayor had a private meeting with Jewish leaders and provided a second extension through June 30.
Bloomberg ended up capturing 80 percent of the Jewish vote in Borough Park.
“It’s amazing that last year, in the middle of an election year, Mayor Bloomberg found the money to restore the vouchers,” said City Councilman Lew Fidler (D-Brooklyn).
“We need that miracle again this year. There is no election for him to face.”
The cutback in Priority 7 vouchers is part of a larger $25 million reduction in the day care budget.

so all go out and sign up for welfare so you get vouchers child care and all of the other goodies out there.
have to agree with bloomy on this one . we must stop feeding off the govt its not healthy
Well to all you gullible new yorkers, welcome to the true face of politicians. their campaign is to promise EVERYTHING GOOD but in reality once voted in they show you their back side and this is the reason why me and so so many others don’t bother voting. bloombug got his way got his 4 yrs more so if can terrorize up and show his bak side. i knew he was lying all the way through. next time don’t be so gullible to politicians. let them run the show and vote for themselves. so now we must get rid of bluebug.
This freshman Steve Levin guy was always against vouchers; question what changed him? What a hypocrite not politic!…..
well when you vote for a liar what do you expect
Why doesn’t the govt have the right to make cuts in order to close the budget gap. Money doesn’t grow on trees.
So what should the city cut? Every item in the budget has its own intrest group that fights the cuts that’s why we have a budget of billions of dollars
Shame Shame Mike
Raised all taxes
Raised all fines
Now Pulling the plug on Priority 7 vouchers..
The city should provide full Scar Limed for all Kids, if theese kids would go to PS it would cost the city much more….
most frum yiden are against these vouchers. he should rather lower the taxes for the correct people.it is time for people to have kosher money, and not resort to schtick.
No problem mayer bloomberg. My kids are in private school so give me back my taxes you take from me to educate someone else’s kids.
Yea and that Bloomberg ……. (Lets go guys, come out of tyour hole
We need that “MIRACLE” again this year.
This is the key word in this article. What are you Thinking? With 40% less tax revenue coming INTO the city pockets, you really think that the city will keep this program going again and again?
1) it’s funny because last year the council refused to put the priority 7 vouchers back in the budget and it was the Mayor and the Mayor alone who put it back. 2) every year its removed from the budget and restored , not only last year (election year), because its not a mandate service. 3) everyone said that bloomberg wouldn’t continue it from January – June of this year because the election was over and it still continued under bloomberg.
I don’t agree with the voucher program but anyone that didn’t see this coming is very stupid, the only reason it was saved last time was because bloomy the 3rd wanted to win the elections.
You voted for him therefore you deserve it!
The mayor is right and he is supported by most progressive jewish organizations that recognize there is NO MONEY to pay for these subsidies. All sectors are being cut and the day care vouchers will also have to be cut back. Most families cover their own day care costs and so should these families. What makes them so special??
I don’t feel for these Chasidim. They placed their trust in a politician instead of Hashem. Be glad they aren’t sitting in a prison for 2 years the way Yosef did.
If they had any faith, they would be accepting of what is instead of getting furious over a politician being a politician.
All,
Stop working, get on to wlefare, the gov will pay ur childrens tuition.
I guess government prefers workless bums than hardworking middle individuals.
What is it that every block in east new york, crown heights and bedstuy has a day care center?
NU! What did you expect!!!!!
He got what HE wanted!! No we can go and jump off a cliff!
When are we going to learn????? YOU CAN NOT TRUST A LIBERAL POLITICIAN!!!! (and a conservative not much more ….) the only way is term limits and then we’ll get one term that they’ll do what’s right if they want to get re-elected!
this all doesnt make sense why should the city feed the habit of people who dont know their limitations this is really rediculous theese freeloaders think others are fools because they dont fall for their shtick this is a shame they are tottaly shameless its a big hillel hashem to delude others if you cant take care of youre own children then dont expect others to, fools
pay your fair share of taxes and then maybe the City will have the funds to provide you with these vouchers. Got to pay taxes, Hasids, if you want the gravy from the City’s chulent pot.
I hate Bloomberg with a passion, however, he is dead right on this one. You cant always be on the dole. Go out and seek your own subsidy. WOrk for a lving and stop always mooooching off the govt. roles.
Go ahead mike we all voted for u just do what ever u feel like
Scar Limed….. Awesome! I was trying to figure out what type of skin condition that was….
On a serious note, Yeshiva tuition is a serious condition that drains the resources of our community’s parents (including professionals). There is one solution. MASS REGISTER OUR CHILDREN TO THE LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOR THE COMING SEPTEMBER.
So you all took the childcare bribe and now you feel cheated. You should have been honest in the first place.
I feel the pain, but I am angry that people fell for it in the first place, this was predicted by every normal person. Bloomberg was forced on to us by the same people who want Hikind out.
These so called Askanim know nothing. I am happy I voted no to Bloomberg twice.
After all is said and done the Yeshiva system with its dual curriculi and increased staff with low paying parents cannot possibly survive without govt help. Call it vouchers , lunch program, books, what have you… we are going to need it. In addition, the city is saving billions of dollars by the fact that we don”t use their public education system. But they cannot legally support us directly because of the seperation of church and state (something that serves us well in the US today). So we are caught in the middle of all this. No govt schools no sufficient private funding. there is only one answer: SCHOOL VOUCHERS. it might not happen in NY , maybe TEXAS… no Bloomberg there…
Maybe these chasidim should have voted for Thompson!!
Simply complaining against budget cuts in a bankrupt city and state is a poor strategy.
You need to show whose budget is not being cut, and compare its importance to the vouchers. If less important items are not being cut, or are getting increases, you’ve got a case!
I once heard that they spend for each special ed child in 50,000.00 a year, and when we need any help we need to go through, you know what tzuros……
I want lower taxes. Everyone needs to live on their own budget and so does the city. Why should the city pay for your children and your programs-no one is paying a dime to me. Lets get working folks- if you want tzedakah knock on my door-don’t steal my money through the govt.
did you ever look at your schar limid receipt? why cant it be accurate? if so then the schools can handle it!!!!!!
why did 80 percent of bp voted for bloomberg? tompson had promised not to cut vouchers. only because of the so called askunim who had put all their weight for bloomberg now they are going to take picture in front of city hall. what a bunch of liars!
For all of you who say that it is not the government’s problem to pay our tuition, you are contradicting yourself in many ways.
Uncle Sam takes our taxes to pay for public school education for our kids, but does not use it for that purpose.
We pay out of our own pockets for our tuition, thereby saving the government lots of money, since public school education is alot more costly, and instead of paying for our education, the government gets our taxes.
Very many posters have commented about the work issue. I do not know of anyone who willingly sits home all day and does nothing. The only exception is Kollel (they ARE doing somthing – Learning.) which in that case, the wife usually works.
If brooklyn has so many jobless laydigayers, where are they????
The majority of people work hard for their money, but the wages(after all the taxes) is just not enough to support a family.
If you want to argue that if they would have degrees they would get better pay, just ask your doctor or lawyer why they need a duel income. (and remember the student loans that have to be paid.)
If you want to argue the big family issue, you probably don’t belong on VIN.
