Jerusalem – A massive forest fire broke out this afternoon in the hills surrounding Jerusalem’s Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem. Police initially suspected arson, but by early evening concluded that careless picnickers were to blame and detained a 15-year-old Haredi youth who had been playing with fire, together with several friends, in the forest.

Police suspect that the boy’s school class left the site to tour the city without extinguishing the flames they had lit.
The blaze erupted at around 1:30 P.M. in the Aminadav Forest, just outside the capital’s Ein Karem neighborhood. Firefighters attempting to contain the fire reported that the flames were closing in on the nearby hospital, where police say dozens of cars caught alight in the hospital parking lot. Approach roads to the hospital were closed for several hours, except for ambulances.
Police ordered hundreds of residents of nearby moshavim Ora and Aminadav to evacuate their homes, fearing the flames would reach them. Some 30 firefighting teams and five firefighting airplanes battled into the evening to control the blaze. Last night, Jewish National Fund officials estimated that over 1,000 dunams (about 250 acres ) of forest had already been incinerated.
Well, the Charedi don’t use that hospital anyway.
Detained a child?
They should make an example of this bochur so that others will know not to play with fire. At a minimum, his family shold be made to pay for all the damages to public and private property.

It may or may not surprise many of you to know that some chareadi schools (chadorim) are just letting out now for the “summer” (2 week) vacation.
Amongst many children from large families with limited resources it is common to make a small BBQ fire and roast potatoes. This expends time and energy and costs a potato and some salt.
Since I was not there, I can’t be sure this is what happened, but I can be sure that if it is what happened the media will have no trouble painting a mistake (not being careful) as terrorism since the culprit was charaeidi.

if this is the case, then the school is responsible. A school trip must have a supervisor with some brains and responsibility. The first thing that everybody knows about picnicking or camp fire is never leave a fire before it is extinguished. If the supervisor does not know that then again the school is responsible for sending an idiot. And did the school even tell then about fire safety in the woods if not the head of the yeshiva should be fired.

if true then arrests should be made and the boys should be punished
I believe the hospital in question was Hadassah Hospital that was on the brink of having to move its patients from the facility. They may be ‘kids’ at age 15 but normal kids have more common sense than that. They should be punished just as anyone else would. Sorry, but i am rather sick of those who are ultra orthodox being exempt from paying the price for any horrors the commit.
