New York, NY – On Tuesday, The New York Times’s columnist Jim Dwyer wrote about a photographer, Duane P. Kerzic, who was arrested by the Amtrak police while taking pictures of a train that he was preparing to enter in a photo contest sponsored by the railroad itself.

On Wednesday, our colleagues on The Lens blog, presented a nighttime view of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, above, taken on Tuesday by another photographer, George Hahn, a 39-year-old Web site designer who lives nearby in Manhattan. He was also questioned by an undercover police officer.
These stories are becoming increasingly common as authorities seek — often against their own stated regulations — to smother photography in public places under the blanket of “security.”
