Cedar Rapids, IA – A former Iowa kosher slaughterhouse executive is serving his 27-year prison sentence on federal financial fraud convictions at a medium security prison in Otisville, New York.

According to an order filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids, Sholom Rubashkin was transferred to the Federal Correctional Institution on Aug. 2
Rubashkin’s attorney, Guy Cook, had requested Otisville during his sentencing hearing.
Cook noted Monday that the prison is close to Rubashkin’s family and it can accommodate his religious obligations.
Rubashkin, a former manager of Agriprocessors in Postville, was convicted last fall of 86 charges. He is seeking a new trial.
Agriprocessors was the site of a May 2008 immigration raid in which 389 workers were arrested.
This is a cause for great simcha. The Rubashkin family and his yiunglach will be able to spend the yom tovim in close proximity to Rav Sholomo Mordeachai and hopefully b’yh in several years, he might be able to be freed on parole. They have a minyan at Otisville for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur although it is probably not the kind of davening he is used to.
dear media, write again and again 86 charges… raid… 389 ileagel workers…. bank fraud…. bcus soon when it will be aproved that this Judge was deeply ileagle involved and heavyly biased against Rubashkin, you will all bust and red-faced. bunch of fony loosers
Hopefully from there he will be sent home after a new trial.

“Smr can’t get parole”
Well, if he won’t be able to get parole, than spending the 25 years at a more “heimish” federal prison in the New York area is a lot better than having him locked away at some redneck prison in the South or midwest where it is harder to find a minyan and the quality of the hashgacha is not nearly as good as Otisville.
I am very happy to hear this since he can find other jews but from the other hand he is very far from his family that lives in postville
To all: the medium security prison is not the one where all the frum people are doing time. They are in the camp. There are two facilities in otisville one is for drug dealers and rapists and yes medium security has fellons of that caliber – just watch oz that prison is medium security NOT max. And the ther is for the white collar criminals.
Otisville may have all the amenities a frum yid may need to make life a little easier while there. But , lets look forward to him being released to go HOME after the appeal is won.
reply to #2 , you are so bitter right, and i cant wait this should already happen
It’s a sad state of affairs when everyone is praising a prison for having a minyan & kosher food available. It’s a prison – everyone there was convicted of a crime – and some of the people there actually did what they were convicted of.
It’s Rosh Chodesh Elul. Remember to daven for him and all Jews who are not free – Hashem y’rachem!
Its a bid sad that just as we celebrate rosh chodesh Elul many here are kvelling that Shlomo Mordechai will be zocheh to spend the rest of his life at a Federal Prison with daily minyanim and good chassideshe hashgacha. Has the world gone crazy??
just want to remind everyone who might be interested in filing a Judicial Ethics complaint against judge Reade: Google “Iowa Judicial Qualifications Commission” and click on the correct link…..then youll see on the home page “Filing a complaint”

You are from the mikatanay emunah. Yeshuos Hashem kiheref ayin. It should be like Yosef hatzaddik, “Va’yiritzuhu min habor”, they chased him out of prison. BTW, there is no parole in the federal prison system. A person might get a few months off the end of his sentence, but they do not bring him up for supervised early release.
why is he more pidyon shvuim then the 10 minyonim tzadikim being held there????

If a person is frum, he wouldn’t be doing time.

Once sholmo mordechai was convicted by a jury of these felonies and sentenced to jail, is there still a question of “pidyon shavuim”? We may not agree with the sentence and most of us don’t but yidden are NOT obligated to seek the early release from prison of every convicted felon who happens to be jewish regardless of their guilt or innocence. If that was the case, there are literally tens of thousand of jews imprisoned in the U.S. for crimes ranging from tax evasion to gruesome rapes and murders. Are you suggesting we have a chiyuv to have them all freed? If so, why do frum jewish security patrols in heimeshe neighborhoods assist in the detention of jews suspected of crimes and turn them over to the police for prosecution in the criminal courts??

Please find someone who can rewrite this for you in English.
Not only is this impossible to understand, but embarrassing to all of the Frum community when an outsider reads it and thinks that this is the level of literacy of the religious community.

“If a person is frum, he wouldn’t be doing time.”
So ALL the people that were in concentration camps weren’t frum and deserved it? I think G-d may have a slightly different view of things then you do. In fact, if crime and punishment was perfect here on earth it would take away from of our
bechirah chofshis because we would see everyone gets what he deserves. But that is not the case. There is a tzaddik vira lo and a Rosha vitov lo. Why? because G-d keeps score and his scale is very different from what we think is fair or not. But he’s G-d and we’re not, so we have trust him.
