New York – A proposed mosque to be built two blocks from the World Trade Center has little support nationwide, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll suggests.

According to the new survey out Wednesday, nearly 70 percent of all Americans oppose the controversial plan to build the mosque just blocks away from the solemn site in lower Manhattan while just 29 percent favor the construction.
Broken down by party affiliation, 54 percent of Democrats oppose the plans while 82 percent of Republicans disapprove. Meanwhile, 70 percent of independents said they are against the proposal.
The poll also showed opposition did not vary widely by age.
“Support for the controversial project is slightly higher among younger Americans than older Americans, but even among those under the age of 50, six in ten oppose the plan,” said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.
Plans to build the $100 million, 13-story ‘Cordoba House’ three blocks from the site of the attacks on September 11, 2001 have sparked an emotional debate throughout the city. The developer, Sharif El-Gamal, describes the project as an “Islamic community center” that will include a 500-seat performing arts center, a lecture hall, an exhibition space, a swimming pool, a gym, a culinary school, a restaurant and a prayer space for Muslims.
Fortunately fundamental rights of citizens are not subject to majority vote.

Frum Jews should 100% be supporting this Islamic Cultural Center. Their right to build their house of worship is identical to ours.

if yiddishkait were immeresed in some kind of religious insanity in which thousands of it’s folowrs were terrorists and in which millions of it’s adherents suppotred terroism,i somehow doubt there’d be this rush to support a building of a shul next door to an infamous site of said terroism.

I’m sure the families of those who died there would be in agony… if someone had actually died there. This building is a couple of blocks away from the WTC.
Sadly, there is a great deal of misinformation out there. There is no evidence to show this Imam has ever supported terrorism… and believe me, every organization is looking for some evidence.
Secondly, if these people are so anti-American, why have they not been vocal about it in the past? This is not a *NEW* community in the area. This Muslim community has lived in the neighborhood for over 60 years. There has never been a problem with the current mosques in the area so why should there be one now?
The precedent that will be set if this mosque is blocked will cause great difficulty for future generations of yidden. What will happen when communities use “eminent domain” to prevent a shul from opening? They are already trying. One SINGLE precedent is all it will take.
I get that many will say “its not the same thing”. Of course it is not, but the law must not be filled with emotion. It is black and white. Once the precedent is set, it is set. The idea that the majority of Americans are against this mosque is not enough to stop it. Americans were overwhelmingly against civil rights movement. Americans were overwhelmingly against granting women the right to vote…. and so on.
Emotions are what lead to the most dangerous of laws. Emotions led to the “Patriot Act”, which stripped every American of his 4th Amendment rights in the name of “national security”. Emotions led to “don’t ask don’t tell” which forced the military to fire thousands of desperately needed soldiers, technicians and translators.
A system of law should never take into account the emotional whims of the day. It must be a solid rock, or we all lose in the end.
Religious freedom and equal rights in the US for everyone EXCEPT Muslims………….Right?
