Israel – Jerusalem Prepares for Pop Idol Clashes for First Night of Selichot

Jerusalem – Major clashes are expected next month in Jerusalem around the broadcast of the A Star is Born finale from the Sultan’s Pool in Jerusalem.

The final of Israel’s equivalent to Pop Idol is scheduled for Saturday night and strictly Orthodox rabbis object to it for fear that the preparations for the broadcast will take place on Shabbat, and that the heavy traffic expected will block the road for those planning to get to the Western Wall for the first night of selichot (penitential prayers said before the High Holy Days).

This is the first season in which the popular programme is filming its live final in Jerusalem, as a result of intense lobbying by Mayor Nir Barkat, but the event is threatening a crisis within Mr Barkat’s coalition.

“Quiet talks with the mayor did not result in anything,” said United Torah Judaism city councillor Shlomo Rozenshtein. “We are moving from quiet activity to open demonstrations of pain and protest at the desecration of Shabbat.”

Yossef Rosenfeld, the chairman of the Committee for the Holiness of Shabbat, promised that there would be big demonstrations backed by all the main leaders of the Charedi community. “Seeing such a serious desecration of Shabbat we will not remain quiet, but take to the streets.”

Both Keshet, the TV company which produces the programme, and Jerusalem City Hall, have promised that the preparations will be completed before Shabbat on Friday evening and that the broadcast will only begin 90 minutes after Shabbat ends.

Deputy Mayor David Hadari, of the National Religious Party, admitted this week that there obviously would be work on Shabbat but “there have always been events at the Sultan’s Pool on Saturday night – and we can’t change that, as it is part of the status quo in Jerusalem.”

This is Barkats new campaign to try and cause the charedim distress… He goes from one idea to the next.. All credit is due to the gerers who caused all this chilul shabbos.

These charedi misfits are at it again. The production company says they will do all they can to complete work before shabbos and the event itself is motzi shabbos. Looks like the police will have to bash a few keplach again to teach these protestors that they cannot and will not impose their religious preferences on the vast majority of yidden who don’t accept them. The police should make clear that anyone arrested will spend yom tov in jail so maybe that will deter the protestors and make them demonstrate peacefully.

Read the article. There is no chillul shabbos. They will do the work before licht benchen on Friday or after motzi shabbos. I agree that the Gerer Rebbe caused all this mess but don’t blame this on him since there is no blame. The rebbe obviously would prefer not to be associated with the rioting that is done by Litvashe yidden in his name

Shlomo Rozenshtein said “open demonstrations of pain and protest”

The pain comes from the seared lungs caused by the garbage cans that are burned during the protest.

Don’t these professional politicians realize that no one outside of their devotees gives them any credibility anymore?

When will these so called leaders learn the Golden Rule and start to learn the word compromise? They could accomplish so much for Yiddishkeit…..

All works will try to be completed before SHabbos YEA Yea. I say let them do it the week before or during Motzei Shabbos Succos. Compromise, compromise; Yes
always the charedi giving NO. We are talking about SHABBOS KODESH. I now from working as kosher supervision what goes on, for Motzei Shabbos events. That is the reason we don’t have wedding Motzei Shabbos. For once let the non religious so no and maybe it will go a long long way to saying Yes. I am not a fanatic. I work 6 days a week but Friday afternoon comes I stop. I dislike the summer because the longer the day the less enjoyment of SHabbos night for being too tired. I agreed if that want this event not to stop it but must concern the concept of Mechalel Shabbos which must be no

Please post your message in a coherent way out of respect for other readers……what does “techiayas hamaysim” have to do with a secular music competition being held motzi shabbos?

Jerusalem is already looking like Haiti and Bangladesh, with extreme levels of unemployment, high levels of adults with 6th grade level of education, extreme levels of poverty like it’s Calcutta, and poor sanitation. The Charedim are doing their best to drive out the non Charedi Jews who bring business, revitalization, brightness, hope, and taxes to Jerusalem. If by “Holly Jerusalem” Charedim mean a hopeless, sad, unsanitary slum, they are doing a great job at it. The Arabs in Jerusalem at least complain less and fight less.

Don’t the chareidim realize that there have been so many demonstrations over the recent past that they no longer work. There hasn’t been any demonstrations that have accomplished their goal in a long time; the seculars have become so used to them that they are largely ignored (other than a some getting beaten and some going to jail for a day or two).

This is a serious discussion of an important issue regardging shabbos observance and secular right for jews living in eretz yisroel. Your mindless rants are both incoherent and insulting to those who regard VIN readers as among the most intelligent on the internet. If you cannot write an English sentence with punctuation, please post in Yiddish or Polish or whatever is your primary langauge.
