Some 22,000 people made the annual pilgrimage from Israel to Rabbi Nachman of Breslov’s gravesite in the Ukrainian city over the holiday.

Ninety-one of the passengers who were taken off the planes are wanted for questioning by Military Police for allegedly dodging army service. The rest are involved in cases related to Israel’s Execution Office.

In an unrelated incident, two young men returning from Uman Monday night allegedly threw their handbags at the Ukrainian flight attendants, demanded alcoholic beverages and even smoked on the plane.

The flight attendants, some of whom were injured in the incident, filed a complaint with Ben Gurion Airport police. The young men were held for questioning and later released, but they will apparently be indicted.

Another six Israelis who traveled to Uman were detained for holding fake passports.

Hopefully, the nearly 100 draft evaders will be held in jail over yom tov and put on trial for their crime….if they have time to waste flying to Uman they can serve in the army…

    #3,

Piffel, we are all proud of being Jewish, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is complete idiocy.

Flying to Uman? Flying to what? Uman?! REALLY???

First of all, if you have money to fly somewhere, and you’re already in Israel, go give some money to the starving Jews who have been hit hard by the economic collapse!

Second of all, it’s UMAN! It’s a place that we’re not welcome, it’s a place that we were chased out of! MANY TIMES!
Do you know how many Jews were slaughtered there in 1768 by Ivan Gunta, Sh’R’Y? I don’t know! but it was enough that there was a fast day declared on the 5th of Tammuz, wasn’t it?
Then there was the Battle of Uman in 1941, where the Germans liquidated the entire Jewish community and murdered an additional 17,000 Jews….
    So DON’T GO THERE!

    This is just plain stupid!

“go give some money to the starving Jews who have been hit hard by the economic collapse”
Don’t you realize, they don’t have the $$$ to pay for the flights either. They shnur it.
They’re starving themselves, & are ‘mose nefesh’ for the haj.
Every year they usually find some sugar daddy to subsidise the trip.

I’m certain that if you skipped your trip to Uman because you decided to give the money to Tzedaka in Israel; Rav Nachman would forgive you. Imagine the total cost to fly, eat and stay in Uman? We’re talking serious money that would help the living. But of course, it will never happen.

#3 How can you compare a soccer match with a “religious” pilgrimage. One might expect rowdiness at a sporting event, but better behaviour should be the norm for those going to Uman. I happen to think it is a waste of time and money to continue these trips but as long as those who can afford it (or can schnor the fare) are travelling, who am I to supervise how someone else spends their money. I would hope that they would still give tzedakah to local charities at this time of the year. Have an easy fast everyone.

In early times of chassidim, people would shnorrer to spend time with their Rebbe. Walking miles and miles, just to see the countenance of the tzaddik.

#3 sometimes through places that weren’t hospitable to Jews

That is the relationship between a chossid and Rebbe.

This is how chassidim should be!!!!

    Gmar chasimah tovah!!!

to comment #4 you are so right, uman is the most anti semetic place, it is a fad where are all the gedolim to say so, these men and boys should stay home with their families and if you want to spend money and fly somewhere what about the kedusha of Israel, what madness this has become.

    # 1 its not flatbush hockers, its flatbush SHWITZERS. OK? secondly, ewhat do you mean families hit hard by the economic collapse. since when did the economic climate have any impact on israelis? you have a dozen schnorres a minute here brooklyn, and elsewhere. go to any shul. they think of us as suckers. which we are. they come here in droves, just look how they have the whole shpiel down to a science. from car service, and driver to take them from shul to shul, from hachonsas orchim apts,to changing their coins into paper money at luncheonettes on 13 ave.

I never knew that hachnosas kallah collectors needed the money to buy an apt for the young newlywed couple. I(naive me) always thought that the collectors were actually collecting money to pay the caterer, buy the kallah clothes, wedding gown etc. i always thought they couldnt even afford to put food on the table. lo and behold, i learned quickly. Not everyone in Brooklyn owns a home,or a condo. not everyone can afford one. come the schnorrers, and they think money grows on trees here in America. and they take us for sugar daddies, and suckers.

on any given day in Munkatch,as well as in other large shuls, you get bombarded every few minutes by a schnorrer. I am not against giving tzodaka,on the contrary,it says poseich tiftach es yodeicha. the more the better. BUT there is a limit.
do any of them even THINK of working for a change? i doubt it.

It is precisely BECAUSE Uman is what it is that Reb Nachman ZYA asked to be buried there, and by DAVKA doing avoidas Hashem berabim there we are being mekadesh the memory of all who died there al kiddush Hashem!

However, it is long past time to clear out the bad elements and leave Uman Rosh Hashanah for the real Breslov chassidim and admirers of the Breslov derech who are sincere. The commercialization has to stop as well (the cheap and silly annual Itzik Eshel and Chaim Israel songs that rile up all the meshuggeners are among the worst symbols of the Uman-mania that brings the problem cases and ruins it for the Chassidim), and Yidden should build a real achsanya so the goyim will either lower their ridiculous prices or lose out for those who want to rent rooms and get some privacy.
