Israel – The IDF Intelligence Corps has increased its enlistment pool to include haredi women as well as haredi men, Israel Radio reported Monday morning.

Military Intelligence has decided to recruit 10 married haredi women with children. The soldiers will be able to combine a career and family life, and bring their young children or babies to the base.
A military source confirmed these details, and said that the women will be placed in army intelligence units, including Unit 8200 (an information gathering and code breaking unit), computer engineering, and electronics units.
He added that the women will engage in software development and in the promotion of special intelligence projects.
but they need to make separate units for them or there’s no way it’s gonna be allowed…
Don’t mean to speak Loshon Hora about all Jewish ladies, but jewish women are titled ‘Yentas’ for a reason. And now we are going to put them in ‘Intelligence Units’? Are we trying to sabotage the whole country of Israel??? Who thought of this idea? The Arab countries?
It starts off with software development and eventually makes its way to boot camp. Hasn’t history taught you a lesson yet — yeharog ve’al yavor.
Mazel-tov! There are many fine,Hareidi intelligent women, many with children who would be excellent in the field if given the chance. What a wonderful role model for the children as well.
unfortunately we’re lacking the gedolim of the previous generation who had the courage to stand up and strongly demand that frum yidden don’t comply with the governments request, since this is b”yeharag v’al yavor.
todays rabonim, are so dependent on the money from the government that they wouldn’t dare speaking out aganinst any of their demands.
Hashoched Y’aver Einy Chachomin
in a small country its not a bad idea this frees up the men to fight while the women yentas do there thing yentas probably can get more information then men
When the chazon ish said “yharog val yaavor” he meant for mandatory and voluntary service for women. As long as they are in a job where they are being controlled and can’t quit when they want, it is assur. If it is only a regular 9-5 job where they can quit on a moments notice then it may be muter.
I have to agree with AP that this is probably a doorway to other required service but in itself it is a good idea. But Anonymous at 10:08 is wrong. It is not just “taking a job with the military.” Recruitment means you serve at the government’s pleasure for the time specified. They are being chosen from a pool so that means there are more than 10 names on a list. I think the article implies this will be a separate unit but it is office work and religious women work in Yeshivot, Rabbanut offices and other offices alongside men. It that’s a problem, this is a problem but if it isn’t, then this is the same thing…for now.
snoods and guns. the perfect combinztion
I have plenty of female Israeli Chareidi family that are in the computer industry that would jump at the chance to have a government job like this. This is hardly “Charedi women in the IDF” rather its a government job, open to Chareidi women.
i actually think this is an amazing idea! it would give families who are dependent on government funding and the husband sits & learns a chance for the women to earn a descent wage. as for a separate unit for them if its mostly office work, i dont see whats the difference if they work in the “IDF office” or some other type of office where men & women work together. even in our yeshiva systems you have the female secretaries working together with the rebbi’s.
Justify it all you want. But its a foolish idea.
I’m curious: Those that have an issue with this… is it davka the army because its the army? Suppose it was the Mossad or the Shin Bet. Would you feel differently?
