AP photoNew York City – Get out the snow shovels – another serious snowstorm is on the way.
A nasty winter storm is threatening to roar into the city Tuesday night and could dump 10 inches or more of snow on us.

Forecasters say the storm that crippled the Deep South will move off the coast, gain strength, then lumber up the Atlantic seaboard.

“It will intensify as it makes that trek up the coast,” said Joe Pollina of the National Weather Service.

Snow is expected to start falling around 7 p.m. Tuesday and get heavier after midnight. Things are expected to taper off by around midday on Wednesday.

“The heaviest snow seems likely to be around dawn on Wednesday,” he said.
Like many coastal storms, the exact track of the storm will determine the amount of snow that falls on any given area.

With frigid air locked in place, meteorologists do not expect any changeover to sleet or rain except perhaps on extreme eastern Long Island.
“Even a few dozen miles one way or another can make a big difference,” Pollina said.

The National Weather Service forecast predicts 8 to 10 inches of snow in the city, although forecasters warn more is possible. A winter storm watch was in effect for the entire metro area.

The storm and its track bear an uncanny resemblance to the Christmas weekend blizzard that dumped nearly two feet of snow on the city. That storm was unusually intense, packing 60 mph winds and even thunder claps as it pounded the city.

This storm is not quite as big or as powerful as that blizzard – at least not yet.

“The similarity is there \[but\] it’s not as strong as that one,” Pollina said. “We’re not going to see winds that strong.”
Some forecasters say there might be more bad snow news to come.

Long-term weather patterns like the La Nina system in the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic Convergence, which brings frigid air into the northeast may create the perfect conditions for a series of coastal storms to form this season.

Some suggestions: 1) Stock up on food and other supplies, including fresh water, and medications; 2) get some flashlights with batteries; 3) stay indoors unless absolutely necessary; 4) except for those in excellent physical shape, be very careful shoveling snow (the exertion is such that heart attacks can and do happen); and 4) enjoy another day off from school or work!

Without the high winds, it’s not a blizzard.
